Went on a pay and play day last weekend and since then my 90 seems to have developed a few problems.

Even though ive cleaned the radiator fully of all the mud the engine temp goes up really quick to the point at which on the last two journeys down the motorway ive had to pull up and let it cool down after only about 10-15 miles?

Also the engine has started to sound tappety, ive sprayed the belts with some WD40 and it has seemed to get rid of some of the noise but not 100%,
it was fully serviced 2 weekd ago so ai know all the levels are good.

The only 2 things i can think to do further is change the tappets and look at the alternator??

Just wondered whether anyone had anymore suggestions??

Thanks

WD40 is a lubricant. I'd not be spraying it anywhere near drive belts, which are required to grip their pulleys to transmit a load etc.

I'd say you've already blown the head gasket and maybe warped the head. Sniff test, or coolant pressure check, or oil pressure check, or cylinder compression test, or cylinder leakdown test are all diagnostic techniques. Leakdown test is the best, since it will tell you straight away if its the HG and where the actual problem is.

can you see daylight thru rad as cleaning them out properly isnt that easy, remove aux belt and check if noise is engine or auxillary

It was running fine before so you are trying to say abit of mud can possibly do the above?

It doesn't mean your P&P 'caused ' the head failure, it could've been weak beforehand and extra load when on P&P was the final straw.

Watch your temps when P&Ping as they will go through the roof purely as your working the vehicle alot more than you realise, but for short playing about it's not likely to cause damage as such.

I'd look at the rad first, they are a fooker for collecting mud ( this time of year, we have lots of ' sticky ' mud which stays moist in the rad ) and give it a good clean with a hose pipe from the inside of the engine bay out. I removed mine and dunked it in a bath overnight and showered it off ( still fooked as it was years old mud, but helped a little )

Remember if your rad is blocked at all then the intercooler will be also, so check and clean that.

Finally before you get all dirty with the rad, remove the thermostat, dunk it in a pan of water and bring it to the boil, if it opens before the water boils you can eliminate that possible issue ( if it fails to open, water never gets around the system to cool down )

Thanks for the advice mate, thats very informative. ive got it booked into a garage tomorrow so they can investigate

Is overheating the only issue? You mentioned a few problems but only stated that one.

If you've been quick enough to stop the engine before it overheats hopefully you'll have escaped any permanent damage such as a blown head gasket. There are a number of symptoms that may occur with a HG failure such as frothy engine oil, big oil or water leaks over the engine etc.

If over heating is your only issue, this is nothing to do with your alternator or tappets.

As everyone has said, chances are your radiator is full of crap. Failing that you've lost coolant or your water pump isn't pumping (possibly because you've wd40'd the belt that drives it).

In future, I would advise against spraying wd40 on random parts. Yes it's true that it can be used to drive out water, but in general you're supposed to avoid getting oil or grease on the rubber belts in your engine (they perrish), and wd is a lubricant, and highly flammable i believe. As pointed out, the belts need to grip the pulleys they run on, and even if they do get wet, at the rate and temperature they rotate at they will dry off very quickly on their own.
