Hi all

After some help if anyone can, have removed a alarm box from my defender that I'm rebuilding, truck will start fine with it removed, but the lights have stumped me. I have e brake lights, but no side lights at all front or back, no main beam, indicators all work on front but not on the back, have check all fuses and have power going to them all, have check the main beam switch and have no power at that? Any ideas what to check and look for etc?

Cheers

Thats an odd one for sure, had an issue with a sidelight rear one side on mine, fuse ok, changed the holder and everything, still no good, so eventually ran a fresh live wire off of the front side and it worked.

Still like it now

Not sure if three are some relays and dependant on age the fuse box can be a proper pain, mine is C reg 90 on glass fuses, when mine plays up, i have the fuse cover off give it a good blast with the airline and then cover in electrical spray, always seems to cure it, but my 90 lives a rough dirty life on the farm

Cheers for the reply, I don't think the fuse board is the issue it may be but I do have good live feeds there, but if I go up to the the switch for the lights there is no live on any of the 3wires which there should be I guess?

Forgot to add the indicators have been changed for led ones with the new relay fitted aswell

What year/model? If the indicators work on the front but not the back it suggests something in the wiring loom - they are usually just tee'd together. You can check for voltage at the plug where the rear loom joins the main.

To add to Micks post has it got a tow-bar fitted, tow-bar electrics are very often bodged and are also subject to lots of water and dirt ingress around the loom socket etc.

Could easily be a failure there
Had a fault with mine there, when i tried to diagnose it i couldnt believe the mess that was there, joined in loads of places etc when i rewired it had arms of electrical cable discarded on the workshop floor
Good luck

For the headlights - check power at headlights fuse, then switch at steering column. Let us know how you get on. And as above - check all your earths

Have checked for power at the fuse and that's all good but got no power at the stalk?

Indicators were all working fine in till I put less in I can sort that easy I guess by just putting old units in for now

If your rear indicators were working before and now aren't with LEDs fitted then you may have the connector polarity wrong as LEDs only work one way round. Also you say H Reg 300tdi (which is 1990), that means it has had an engine change as 300's came out around 94 so the wiring could have been bodged around a bit. Are you sure it is a 300 and not a 200? Does it have a single flat belt for fan / alternator / steering pump etc?

Yea will give that a go with indicators as I said I can swap these back to original units to get sorted, it's the head lights that is my real problem can't work that one out at all

OK all quick update

Got all the Indicators working how they should now, had to add a few resistors into the wiring and all good.

But I still have no front lights and rear lights by this I mean main beam and full beam and rear tail lights, only way I can get fronts on is if I hit the flasher stalk and them they flash but nothing apart from that so any ideas what could be wrong here? As said have lives at all the fuses but no live at the stalk? Could I just have the ignition wires wring do you think ad I removed them all to take the immobiliser box out, think I have it the right way around?

Not sure where or what else to check now?

So spent the last couple days trying to work this out with out much luck, I have power at ll the fuses and relays but nothing at the light switch could it just be a faulty switch causing it? Is there any way to prove it's the switch at fault?

Which terminals do I need to put the wire to and what am I looking for? Would this work if there is no live going to the switch sorry not the best with electrics

Jumping across the switch with a wire will not work in there is no power.

As for terminals , sorry I have no idea without looking at the switch or a wiring diagram.

If there is no power then you can use a multimeter to check the switch is working.

Do you have power at the switch from the 12V supply?

How do I use a multimeter at the switch to make sure it's working as it should then? And how do you mean do I have power at the switch from the 12v supply there is no power at any if the terminals at the switch?
