First post here. looking at buying a 90, i went to see one the other night that was sound.
i checked insurance today and they said it would b classed as commercial. its a hard top with no windows in the back sides. can anyone clarify this for me please. i would have thought it fell in to the same category as any small 4x4. i have no intentions to use if for any commercial uses. i did do a search but cant get a difinitive answer
thanks

I've got a disco commercial! And its a van, two seats no rear side windows, called a light commercial vehicle on the log book which is what they'll go off cos it comes from dvla. You can insure vans for private use tho! I'd shop around, try A Plan in Thatcham Berkshire they're very helpful and ussually a good price

I dont have a problem with either of my 90`s they are both van sides without windows, one does have 7 seats, the other only 2 but never a problem

Welcome to landyzone.

Sounds like you've only spoken to one company there. I'd say shop around.

Is it going to be your only vehicle or a second (toy) vehicle?

Did you tell them you want to do commercial mileage in it?

If not, try Lancaster or someone like that. I'm pretty sure there is an insurance section on here somewhere that these questions get asked alot. There's probably some company names in there worth checking out.

Mine is a hardtop like you're thinking of getting. I dont have or need commercial insurance. Its very much a second vehicle and (I cant quite remember) but I might well have a limited mileage on my policy. I only use it for commuting really when it snows these days (too expensive to run otherwise).

I think its just down to the companies being knobs cos they all work from the same info! If its a van they need to know its a van but they can insure it to do whatever you want. Shopping around is always the answer with insurance

The insurance database says mine's a soft top, I tell them it's a hard top with 2 seats, private use, limited miles and agreed valuation. They quote accordingly.

You need to talk to a specialist insurer, the mainstream companies lack the knowledge to do Land Rover insurance and as a consequence charge over the odds, if they quote at all.

Good shout on aviva, I'll be looking at them when my insurance is up - just been quoted £400, which isnt too bad at all

thanks for all the reply's.

The vehicle would be used as a second car (toy) with limited mileage.
I think part of the problem is that I am in NI and insurance can be a pain in the rear.
I did a quick online insurance comparison and I am getting reasonable quotes.
I did only check my current insurer that I have a policy with, got the impression they didn't want to insure me on the landy, so I think a separate policy is the way forward.
Insurance just so happenes to be a necessary evil

thanks

My 17 year old 300 tdi Hard Top, which I've owned for 8 years, has always been classified as a Private/Light Goods (PLG) vehicle in the registration certificate.

It has been insured with Adrian Flux for the last 4 years with an estimated annual mileage of 7000. Flux have always treated me with great courtesy and been prepared to offer me a competitive quote each year to keep me as a customer, its currently 240.98.
