Going to see a green 1994 90" defender
Its a van style
200tdi
fresh MOT
VGC
Good s/h
"runs extremely well"
75k

Dealer wants 3k for it.

This sounds relatively well price'd given the value cars are selling privately on ebay at the moment, would you agree?

Definately a buyers market. Knock him down and get your warranty too.
Ignore e-bay prices, the vehicle has to actually sell and be paid for before you can gauge those prices. I would never buy a vehicle off e-bay

I agree with the above comments, always best obviously to see before you buy and if possible get a warranty, the price does seem a bit high, 2300 to 2500 would be ok if its as solid and clean as the ad suggests. If the dealers so confident a 6 month warranty would be a bonus but i'd take a 3 month if you do above average mileage and can keep him to the lower end of the price scale.

As for ebay i can only give my experiences, i've bought about 15 land rovers and 3 spitfires (the triumph car not the fighter plane :)..) and only in 1 case have i had a problem, the gearbox went on a 1958 landy. As i live in Denmark i have to use judgement and ask the right questions to a seller, if i get the impression they're a genuine land rover enthusiast i take a gamble...i've made a few quid selling them on and most right hand drive landys here have passed through my hands, i have to think of my reputation too so i dont buy junk.

i think you've made a good choice with a 200tdi but look around and be prepared to haggle, its worth it in the end! Dont be afraid of ebay, there are good landys there often to a good price compared to a dealer...but you wont get a warranty...swings and roundabouts...take a mate with you who knows what to look for specifically in a landy!!

Good luck! Mark

i dont do the lottery, but i do buy plenty of very cheap sight unseen landys off ebay - collecting them is like opening yer xmas pressy when you were a kid

take cash with you when your collecting and don't be worried about walking away if they'd described it wrongly

also practice not grinning from ear to ear, when you find that the 50 quid rust bucket series comes with a overdrive and a set of near new 750s

all depends where you live, round here most 90/110s are solid but very well used as it's farmers who own them - however if you look closer to manchester or birmingham your more likely to find ones that have been used for taking the kids to school or for the occasional trek overseas - there's also quite a few mares around (in the more built up areas) that look good having had a few bling bits bolted on but which is reality are fit for the scrappy

argi auctions are a good place to find good honest 90/110s that might just need a bit of chassis patching, usually on the rear quarter and outriggers - farmers tend not to have enough time to clean things

Thanks for your advice guys.

I'm not afraid of ebay in the slightest, Valuations do seem alot lower than what ims eeing cars ending at on ebay.

It is all very appreciated, I will let you know what happens tommorrow :)

when peeps ask questions like that i just keep saying to meself - at least they didnt buy a hippo at least they didnt buy a hippo .....

Its not putting me off, however i would have liked the ability to stick it in rwd only for driving on the road.
