90 Bulkhead behind front seats

I am looking to get a Defender 90 300tdi or td5, but want to convert it to a soft top at some point down the line. All the soft tops I have seen have this bulkhead behind the front row seats.
I first thought that the soft tops and hard tops had this and station wagons did not, but this doesnt seem to be the case.

Does anybody know what 90 models this is specific to?
And, what is it for? i.e. is it for rigidity and when I chop the roof off im going to end up with a very wobbly Landy?

Why would you chop the roof off?

Vehicles that are 300tdi and before didn't have the rear bulkhead removed by the factory, this is likely to have been done as an after market mod to gain more leg room.

Some TD5s, usually the higher spec vehicles did have them removed in the factory, others did not. You will usually find that if it has been removed properly, then there will be a strengthening bar or brace of some description to retain rigidity.

You don't mention whether you are fitting a full length soft top, or just a truck cab canvas. If you are fitting the latter then you will require the full height bulkhead for it to attach to.

I wouldn't cut the roof off either it will unbolt in under half an hour!

To be honest, there is no real reason. I just think it looks a bit cooler.
