It's December, t'is the season of jollyness and all that and Monday the 8th got off to a great start.

A trip to the postie to pick up a missed special delivery from Saturday for a replacement sat nav unit that I obtained through one of the greatest acts of generosity I've ever received (you know who you are) followed by the arrival of my All Comms from the states to my work address with no import duty to pay whatsoever. How's that for a great start to a Monday morning.

What better way to combine those two things than a nice trip to work using my new functioning sat nav, Christmas cd playing, cruise control on, a nice shiny all comms lead sat on the passenger seat next to me ....

Then .......

During the intro to the original Band Aid song, I'd just got to the line "there's no need to be afraid", yes there is, I own an L322. From out of nowhere, cruise set at 35 - 40 mph, all four wheels lock up as if someone had slammed the gear stick into park and let out one of those villainous cackles you hear in horror movies and cartoons. I slid for about 15 yards and came to a halt in the middle of the Heysham bypass. A bypass that is narrowed due to roadworks. A bypass that is the main access to the port of Heysham. A bypass that is frequented by extra wide loads and their ever so grumpy escort vehicle drivers. Oh poo. Not such a great Monday after all.

After a call to Green Flag and being told they're experiencing an exceptionally high level of calls at the moment (not surprised, there's a lot of L322s out there), I had to leave my number for them to ring me back within 20 minutes. They rang back within 10 minutes and that was the moment my phone decided to play with me and hang up on the chap who had to leave an answerphone message saying that if I still needed assistance then please ring them back! Oh life, you are a kidder.

Long story short (too late I know), what I suspected to be the gearbox could be the diff as the recovery driver rocked it back and forth and we managed to get it off the bypass and into slip road. After waiting for another recovery vehicle to arrive, as the first wasn't big enough to handle a RR(!), it's now at a Land Rover garage awaiting the news, well the bill, as it was too big of a job for my village.

So peeps, how were your Mondays?

Sounds like your monday was off to a good start! but like you say it is an L322... I bet its been planning this on purpose to coinside with christmas... Its jealous of the package you got your missus and it wants something new and shiny too !!

Ha, wouldn't surprise me ;) It was waiting until the flipping warranty ran out though!!!!

Funny enough I'm just googling my rights as I flick back and forwards here. I bought the Rangie about the 23rd Sept and the dealer gave me 30 days. I lost about a week of that because of the alternator going on it. Some websites are saying that on something major then the dealer should stand for any repairs up to 90 days. I've done less than 700 miles since I bought it. Well I think thats right as the pixels went in my dash soon after buying it!

Has your had the front diff recall work done??

The early L322's were originally fitted with a 'solid' connection from the front propshaft to the front diff....

As it is a Land Rover product, the alignment between the prop and the diff was never quite spot on on some of them and they suffer premature wear and then you lose drive.....whether it would lock up the drive train I don't know...but worth checking. (from what I have read, they just lose drive....but still worth checking)

Thank you as always. Looking at one of those pics, I did pick something off the road that was circular and had a few knobbles on it and it would appear to be that diff size. It was the only thing lying in the road but at the time it could have just been off anyone's random car! My first thought was gearbox then Mr Recovery man said diff so with your input, it sounds like it's getting cheaper! Sadly the Landy garage is swamped at the mo and they can't work on mine until the 22nd of this month so I won't know until then :(

Read the Crock of **** thread. Your vehicle has failed and is therefore not fit for purpose, you have grounds for a county court claim if they don't fix it for free.

Thanks for that, very interesting. I'll be giving him a ring in the morning and I'll post an update. There could be light at the end of the tunnel after all ..........

Its more than 30 days, try six months and upto six years for sales of goods act

Can you post a pic of the bit you picked up off the road ?

I would but it's in the car that's at the Landy garage now :(

It was about 5 inches in diameter and there were three small prongs about an inch long sticking out of it although it looked like there should have been four with the spacing of them. One of the remaining prings had a small bit of plastic attached to it which I think was orange in colour (I'm colour blind!)

Hope this rings a bell with you :)

Not sure what could fall off that big without leaving a shaft clanging along the road.

my money would be on not having the front diff mod done, although it wouldn't be a lot of money. you could also have picked up a random piece of lorry:)

Just as a point when my unmod'd diff went the car lost all drive, the front prop just spun on the stripped splines

That puzzled me after the event (couldn't think straight at the time) as everything seemed in tact underneath so how did this circle thingy fall off? There could have been a split in the ring which is how it came off but again at the time I wasn't really in Sherlock Holmes mode :mad2:

I am with you though that it could be off a lorry though! I know the tyre tracks were mine though
