Hi there,

Can any one give advice hear?

I got a landrover disco (My first 4x4) Kreg on sunday, now i asked the guy about the 4x4 gear know and he replied im not sure about that i've never needed to use it, and it was left at that, the engaged it and i noticed the light come on on the dash then he moved it back and it was fine, now we have just gone shopping at tescos for the 56p oil :) (there limit 6 per customer :( anyway) coming home we know of a dirt track and we thought what the heck lets go down it. and just to test we put it in 4x4 mode and it was great. got to the main road again and pulled over and then disaster!!!

It was stuck in 4x4 mode (the light never turned off) me tried it in several positions and nothing even in a few the disco wouldent move ;S

i looked around and tried again and got it onto gear and limped home. just tried it again and we can now drive fine but it says its in 4 x 4 all the time?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Wappy

hyi mate looks to me as if you got the diff lock stuck on try reversing for a while and try going into high / low gear you may have to repeat this a few times ............ otherwise the shafts got seized ......... out with the centre consul and remove connecting rod /may well free up if you try and use it regulary i had this on mine just a bit of brute force cured mine ..........

is it auto or manual?
if auto must be in "N" before it will engage or dis engage
don t know about manual as i'm new to discovery s my self.....
but i had similar but soon realised not in "N" before i tryed to engage or disengage

Jesus mine just went out after half a meter of being out of DL. Reversing and forward carefully will make it pop out. Don't go too far or else you'll damage it in some rather nasty description!

Hi firstly robint i could kiss you .... well mabey not but im really greatfull, just had the nosey neighbours stairing as i reverse and up and down in front of there houses... lol i moved it back and the light turned off :) but it wouldn't move (the car that is) i fiddled around abit and it now does. gotta say it is a little stiff so i dont think he was joking he never used it lol lol

Markw thanks for that but mines is a manual but im in the same boat as you im learning as i go lol.....

Btw what does the things stand for i have on the knob (what it does for me)

Off (4x4 light comes on)

Lock (4x4light comes on)

Below if the 4x4 light off

L (Nothing happens i carnt move no mater what gear im in)

N (Nothing happens i carnt move no mater what gear im in)

H (im currently here for me to move)

Again thanks lads you've been a great help

not sure where your from !!!!!!!!!!!
go and find a nice ****ty field........... and have a play your soon whats what after getting bogged down once or twice !!!!!!!!!!!!!
go have some fun and get it really ****ty and post your piccys on here after
just be careful !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

L= LOW
H=High
N=Nuetral

High is normal gearing
Low is like having 2 or 3 lower gears than normal.
Off is normal
Lock is Diff lock, which is what the 4x4 gearing is. Keeps all the wheels spinning at the same rate to keep grip.

Oh, and we have to stick ours in first, push the clutch down and try pushing the stick slowly forward, eventually it went into nuetral, then low, (bruised hand on the cup holder though lol) Much easier going back.

It gets better to drop to low after a while, we think that it never got used like that in the 12 years before we got it lol

L - Low range for pulling heavy loads or when you need lots of torque.

N - Neutral - used on the older vehicles to drive equipment using a power take off. Note vehicle will never move in this position. Good security feature if leaving you car somewhere!!

H - High range for normal daily driving and crossing fields etc.

unfortunally this is the case with most decent discos they were built to be abused i mean used and in many cases have never seen a green road this was the same when i bought mine so i am beating the **** out of it BUT it wont give up !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It took alot of attempts, but we eventually got there. Thankfully

hi there, you still seem to be saying the car wont move at all when in "L" do you mean its just revving as if its in neutral??
that cause it is, put it into gear and lift the clutch slowly as you apply pressure the transfere lever and ittle click in, make sure it in though cause as you drive off it may pop back out again leaving you revving in the middle of a junction.

Invite a mate round for a beer...

Get underneath the car armed with a big can of WD40 and a torch. Give everything that looks like a gear linkage a good ol' soaking in the stuff. Get yer mate uptop to give the lever a good stir in all directions at the same time.

It is nothing to worry about... almost the contrary!

Stiff Transfer leavers are most usually a sign of lack of use. Which in turn is usually a sign of little off road abuse.

You need the clutch to change from low to high range, but you dont need to dip it to engage or dis-engage diff lock.

Make sure you understand what it all does before using any of it... It's not 4x4 mode. It's perminant/full time 4WD

The little lever gives a second set of gear ratio's and a center diff locker.

an when you've done all that take it off road and use it for what it was made for:D
it's loads of fun

Thanks a bunch lads..

Im gonna get a extra large can of WD and drain the blody thing in it lol lol

while down at work i had a play and it seams to be a little better today.. it dosent seam to stick in 4wd (thanks for the correction battenberg) it did once but thats all.. as for the off road all the fields around here are shutoff with gates but ive been told of somewhere to try so im going up this weekend while the wife walks the dogs and kids im off for a little test drive, ;) :D:D:D

again thanks lads

btw i'll try and get some pics too ;)

It will be stuck in 4wd because it's made to have 4wd all the time. You can't select 4wd or 2wd. You're talking about the centre diff lock. Don't just go driving offroad randomly make sure you're allowed to be there. There are enough anti offroad campaigners and flamin do-gooders out there looking for ammo.

If your Disco has never been used in low range, you might need to remove the centre console and drill the rivets out on the metal ring holding the rubber gearshift gaiter in place.

Then you can gain better access to the top of the linkages for engaging/disengaging the high/low range and diff lock.

Perhaps saturating it all in WD40 will help, but you might find that you will need to strip it down to help free it off and yes, it can be fiddly.

I had this problem with mine to the extent that I had to remove the transfer box (high/low) lever to unsieze (with heat) the steel cross shaft which had corroded into the aluminium casting.

Make sure you reassemble with some copper grease to help prevent it happening again.

Owning a 4x4 does not give you free rein to go and drive anywhere, perhaps it's just as well those gates local to you were locked up!
Make sure you go and buy some OS maps before even thinking about driving off road, ignorance is NO excuse for trespassing or for driving on footpaths or bridleways.

Hope this helps.

Hi there, can we just get one thing clear before we move on - these Disco's are permanent 4 wheel drive, there is NO switching between 2 and 4 wheel drive. Ok, now that I've got that off my chest:

There are 2 gear lever type things and it sounds like you're not quite sure what they do so I offer an explanation. The longer main gear lever acts in the normal way like all cars. The second smaller lever has two jobs:

1. If you just move it backwards and forwards it changes between 2 sets of gear ratios. The idea being that when you go off-road or when you are for example towing and want more control at a lower speed, you can select this other set of gears.

2. If you move the lever to the left and back again, you are selecting and then switching off, the centre diff-lock. "What is that", I hear you cry, well it's a helpful piece of kit that you can use if you're on slippery ground, mud or snow for example and gives you more grip.

Hope that helps,

Cheers, Dave

Thanks for the better explanation thebiglad that makes more sence now. (NOOB ERROR ;) )

lol it shows im new to this lot lol lol lol..

as for the off roading what i ment by the gate comment is there is no where to go off roading, but my m8'ts family own a farm just off the m1 so im off there for a little fun, but there is also plenty of green lanes about too so shouldent be all too bad...

but i've been looking and asking about from what i hear there are several Pay and play sites in West yorksire so im gonna do a little more digging first to see where they are.... ;)

again thanks all for all you helpfull comments,, each day im learning shead loads on discos. hopefully soon i might be able to help some of you guys????? lol lol lol
