Hi All, Not posted on here for a while. Had the Range Rover for some 6 years now, And has been pretty reliable. Serviced and maintained by myself.
Anyway. The head gaskets need doing, Got exhaust gases bubbling up into the coolent. Seems a straight forward job.
What I am worried about is the block has slipped one or more liners as it did overheat.
When I brought the car it had just been blessed with a brand new dealer supplied engine. I know the origional engine would have had the standard type of liners but was thinking did they modify this problem for the new engine that was fitted in 2006 with top hat liners? Has anyone comne across this?
I just want to be prepared for what I might find when I strip the top end this weekend.
Also, anyone know the best make of gaskets? Is there any sort of uprated kit out there.

Thanks to any help I get

top hat liners has allways been after market fitment,so new lr engine will be std liners

Thanks for the quick reply. If it has slipped a liner would the only option be a replacement engine? Seen second hand ones on flee bay, but that seems to be a risk

i should imagine bore is cracked behind the liner ,and there wont be visible evidence, you can buy top hat linered block to build up, used engine is a risk as you cant tell till engines hot

A chap on here recently just forked out on a taop hatted short block from Turner Enginering....£2250 Plus the Vat mans Whack.....ouch!!

Not to be the bearer of bad news on that....but the bay can often times produce short blocks too for around the £1500 mark if your willing to take a punt....

Well thanks all for the advice. Will put a post up with what I find. The car itself is really good condition so if the block is cracked I will have the Hugh enjoyment of building up a new engine. Never pulled such a big engine from a car before.
What's the best way to tell if the block is cracked?

often the only way is to either bore liner thin then pickle out ,or remove heads block water ways ,fill with hot water and pressurise with air line ,if cracked it squirts up between liner and block
