i have a 2000 thor range rover, it has the later thor i believe engine with a top lpg conversion, problem is when cold it runs rough, as if it is misfiring it is hesitant under acceleration and also makes a kinda popping noise or bang when you try and give it welly, sometimes its worse than others but this is alwyas when cold upto getting to normal half way temperature, i hope its nothing serious because i really cant afford a big fix at min theres no signs of water loss or overheating so dont think its water in a chamber what else could it be all help or suggestions much appreciated.

there is no reference as to which fuel is causing the problem or if one is ok or if both are causing the problem, i will however rephrase the question.

at the time of fore mentioned problems with the ignition, is the car running on petrol, lpg or does it happen on both fuels?

if it is not on petrol but is on lpg i would suggest a plug change and possibly lead change. you may also benefit from changing the plug gap from 0.8mm standard to 0.7mm.

also what have you done to try and stop this issue, do you know the name of the lpg systems ecu controller, it should say on the controller. do you have the cable and software to hook it up to a laptop? if so have you run through the settings, checked em and or changed em.

if its doing it on petrol then thats a different story!!!

Three likely causes in order,plug leads,plugs then air flow meter.Please buy genuine or decent quality leads,NGK plugs - BPR6es will do fine.The air flow meter needs checking on Testbook or similar,by doing live data readings.The cheap ones on EBay dont work properly,so if you end up replacing it go genuine or direct from Bosch.
There are other possibilites but the above are most likely,another thought is that the LPG system has not been adjusted correctly to match petrol trims so the ecu is confused and needs a reset.(And getting the LPG right too.)

hi it is the sytem that starts on petrol then when engine gets warm it flicks over to lpg, looking at the guage its doing it on both though becuase the sytem switches over before the car gets to full operating temperature and this is where the car runs ok.
 
ideally you need to disable gas, run on petrol and see if its still there. where are you dan?

the system should allow you to stay on petrol, if there is no button, find the tank and close the valve, it will then think its out of gas and switch to petrol!
 
update, have been to rpi today, excellent people, plugged into computer changed leads and plugs reset all excellent now thanks.
 
Thats the first time in a long time anyone has had reason to say anything nice about RPI - Are they under new management ?
 
I've worked on cars they have "worked on", not impressed - they seem to be based on form not function.I'd rather deal with companies like Turner engineering and Ashcroft transmissions.They are straight,and upfront - do what it says on the tin.You only need look at the RPI site to see the difference.
 
Have dealt with Ashcroft also..brilliant, Ian is the guru of Landy transmissions.
When I had my 3.9 Vogue a few years ago, RPI were the only company to be upfront and enlighten me to porous block/slipped liner syndrome after I had changed the head gaskets twice in two weeks. There was no internet then as such and Land Rover were in complete denial. Bought a short engine from them and it was superb. I have reccomended them to other people and they have been highly satisfied. They are also suppliers of the raved about Coscast engines. Whilst I have no experience of their tuning and LPG facilities, I can say from personal experience that they are first class. I fully realise that 8inaV has something of a grudge against them, but I write from MY personal experience and have no axe to grind.
 
No,I have no grudge against them at all - like you I speak as I find.I have never bought anything off them or even spoken to them,I have however mopped up the mess they have made of a few vehicles,and still trying to sell single point LPG for Gems and insisting they MUST be chipped to be reliable is just rubbish.
Everyone else in the trade has moved on,when single point LPG was all there was then people had little choice,now we do and its in a different world.Talk to any decent LPG place and they will tell you why.
 
Okay, I have never had experience of their LPG or tuning setup. I do know, however that sequential is the best option for the P38. I am not that involved with converted Range Rovers of all ilks. I am a dinasaur in that respect and prefer to leave mine as it was designed and built..to run on petrol. They do give problems when petrol fuelled and I don't feel the inclination to throw another possibility of potential problems at it..and there are enough LPG related problems on here as the posts confirm.
That said, a friend of mine swears by LPG and I realise the cleaner burning properties and running cost advantages are impressive.
I have gone into the ownership realities of various V8's with a clear understanding of the running costs involved (On petrol) and if those costs were beyond my finances, I would not have considered them.
