Hi all
My oil pump is playing up so needs replacing also timing cover leaking and tiny water pump leak.
So while I'm there I thought I would change the timing chain and gears.
I have never done one before so feeling cautious.
Any help would be appreciated.
or if you want to help I'm just NE of Cambridge I have a kettle on permanent boil and a frying pan.
Thanks

The fun bit will be the two bolts that pass through the crank case cover and into waterway. They usually corrode and snap when you attempt to remove them.

I've just replaced the oil pump on my 4.6.

The hardest part of the whole job was getting the viscous fan off and also the crack pulley nut.

shows my bodge for getting the crack pulley off

I followed the instructions on RAVE and it was quite easy to be honest, mine has 147k on the clock but the chain looked ok and I didn't change it.
There is a How to, in the Range Rover section

The sump has to be dropped to pull the timing cover off.

Apart from that, the only other faff is undoing the crank pulley, but you can jam the crankshaft with a block of wood to undo that once the sump is out of the way.

Get it up on stands and let the front axle drop down.

Think about a new oil pump rotor set while it is all out, or if you can run to it, fit a new timing cover as the ali casting wears where the rotor runs.

Use sealer on the long water pump bolts and if you are using the correct OAT coolant you won't see any corrosion in the water jacket.
