have another thread on this but this goes straight in without trying to find it in a long thread. After a long trip I got home and the dreaded sound of a rattly chain. I ordered a Febi timing kit and went about stripping the front. the very Young water pump I put in was cream crackered and making a noise just like a slack chain in a bucket. as I had the timing kit I thought it would be a Good idea at the same time as the water pump id do the timing chain tensioner. to do it you need the fan off the water pump and the metal breather pipe that goes over the water pump , plus I had the pipe off the pump on the drivers side. you need a 19mm rachet spanner and the nut on the tensioner can be loosened from the front by only 2 clicks of the spanner at a time
After lossening I could get my hand in from the top unscrew it and the tensioner popped out with it
Now this is the important bit. The tensioner comes compressed don't press it as it will pop out. slip it in with the cover nut and tighten by hand as you don't want to cross thread it then tighten from the front
After taking all the bits off as above it took no longer than 10 mins to do as the tension in the tensioner was not making me struggle trying to push it in whilst trying to screw the cap on in a very tight environment
I put everything back together with the new water pump , plus I changed my 2 belts as they are less than £20 , plus I changed and I inspected anything else that need replacing
Anyway preyed and started her up. Initial bit of chain rattle probably 2secs and then purred like a kitten
So can be installed compressed and saves a lot of time and reduces the risk of it pinging out whilst trying to get the cover bolt on. She lives to see another day.
