P38A 4.0 mpg when towing car trailer?

Wait.

You tow a caravan at 90mph???

It'll end in tears......

Yup. Doing that since 2008 and never even had a warm moment, despite crossing Europe North to South at least twice a year.

The equipment is more than adequate (wide and stable caravan, good stabilisers, heavy car that also had a long wheelbase + air suspension, ...) and I do have quite a bit of experience, so I don't bomb down the long hills in France at 90mph and if there is side wind, I lift off straight away and cruise at 60-65mph.

This is the reason I have done away with my Shogun. It had much more trouble towing the caravan than the S-class (not more stable and much slower), so what's the point of having a 4x4 workhorse??

Hope a RR V8 (diesel or petrol) can fill that void.

Can you warn us in advance what roads you will be travelling on and when so we can avoid them?

Would hate to see the carnage of a van flipping at 90mph.

Do you need to tow at that speed? Seems a bit arrogant?

I tow a 32" caravan (2200kg) with an S63 AMG. Needs approx 10mpg. (Doing 90mph all the way on the motorway though).

You obviously have far different regulations out there than in the UK where the maximum trailer length (exc. drawbar) is 7metres & motorway speed is restricted to 60mph/97kph when towing.

His is only 32" long so maybe that's why he can tow it at 90mph!!! Mind you, 32" long and 2200kg, must be made from neutron star to be that heavy!!!

Or maybe he's just full of bulls*%t. I mean, 10 mtr caravan?!?!!? That's a static!!!

Maximum sizes for towing

Towing vehicle under 3500kg GVW

Length (excluding the coupling and drawbar)

7.0 metres

Maximum width

2.55 metres

Towing vehicle over 3500kg GVW

Length (excluding the coupling and drawbar)

12 metres if at least 4 wheels

Maximum width

2.55 metres

Length of towing vehicle & trailer combined

18 metres

Maximum overhang of load from rear of trailer

3.05 metres

I would imagine this is Europe wide law.

Had a look online but can't seem to find much information on mpg figures for towing. I've a 400 mile round trip to collect a classic 4 door and I'll be using my dad's '98 P38 4.0 auto. So I've got 200 miles towing car trailer then 200 miles with the RRC on the trailer. Nearly all motorway, can anyone give me some idea of what mpg i might expect? Was hoping to use my '92 Tdi but needs a few things doing and won't be ready in time.
Thanks
Yikes! When I first looked at this thread i thought it said "4 mpg when towing car trailer", I was going to ask you how on earth did you get such an economical Rangie, they're usually heavier on fuel than that ?

I thought that too, did a double take when I saw it!!!

Incidentally, I've been having a think back over all the cars I've ever towed with and the range of things I've towed. I would say, a good figure to work on for steady motorway work is 50-60% of what you get solo.
So, for example, if you normally get 22mpg from your rangy at 80mph on clear motorways (As I do regularly) I would expect to see 12-14mpg towing at a steady 60mph on a clear run.
My merc does 45mpg on the runs at 80 and around 28mpg towing at 60-65mph under the same conditions.

I must say though, I always seem to get far better MPG on the german autobahns than UK motorways, not sure if the fuel is different or if it's just that the german autobahns are generally less busy, therefore less braking/accelerating.

I never said I stuck to the regulations. You always stick to 70mph with your car on the motorway?

As for max trailer size, in Europe you can have a caravan that is more than 7m long (mine is 7m50 body + drawbar = 9m60 total) and it can be 2m55 wide.

The same law applies in the you since 20 April 2010 when the ban on caravans over 2m30 wide was lifted. (although I assume the Brexit idiots will find it useful to turn that change in laws back too in order to constrain the UK consumer to buying only local caravans  )

I would recommend you come off your island once and check what the rest of the planet looks like.

Meanwhile, a crash course in politeness would do you good too.

Looks like a pikey wagon on tour :D do you tarmac drives ?

Believe me, you wouldn't want me anywhere close to any DIY :D

PS: there is maybe a reason why gypsies choose German caravans and not British ones to live in and why they tow them with a Japanese 4x4 and not a Range ;)

Anyway, I don't care about image whatsoever. I don't see why I should go on holiday in a cramped caravan and tow it with a BMW X5 or a LR Discovery because of what other think.
What other think is their problem, not mine.
