just after some advice please
ive just bought a 300tdi to go in my landy
the engine is from an r reg discovery which ive been told had done 130 k
was told cam belt had been replaced but thought i would change it anyway while engine was on the bench
all im wondering is is it worth doing anything else while its out ?
like head gasket etc or should i just do belt and leave rest alone ?
thanks in advance for advice
carl .

Cam belt will be a bit easier with the engine out and takes a couple of hours.

Head gasket will take a couple of half days and is probably as easy with the engine in.

I'd suggest cam belt and water pump while you're at it and leave the HG - if it ain't broke why fix it?

Unless it was a 300tdi already you will be needing to move your chassis engine mounts to line up with the 300 mounts.

You will also need to customise all the front end pipework and shorten the exhaust about 4 inches as the 300tdi is going to be sitting in the 2.5/200 position.

Option two is fit a 300tdi gearbox (Defender long shaft) then all the pipework from a 300 can be used. It's not that bad but it will not just drop in.

its going in a 1966 series 2 88 inch
its already got an lt 77 gearbox in and a ford 3ltr v6
not new to landrovers ive had this one for 22 years now so know it inside out
weldings not a problem but i wont be welding to chassis due to it been a new galv one i will alter engine mounts on the engine side.
i had to move engine and gearbox forward when i put the lt77 in so thats how i did engine mounts then .
also got a 380 gearbox so going to look at lenth of the 2 gearboxes and decide which to use .
all depends on lenth of rear prop .
one other job im going to do while its all in bits is convert it to power steering so its all go in my shed ....

read on here about p gasket so thats been done
when ive come to put water pump back on the faces dont seem to mate up very well like the water pump housing has warped ?
is this possible or normal ?
