Hi all, newbie to Land Rovers here who needs some advice. I looked at an M reg Discovery 300 Tdi 3 door today. When I asked about when the timing belt was changed last, the seller told me the engine had a timing chain, not a belt. Everywhere I have looked about 300 Tdi engines says they have a timing belt so is he right? Did they make one with a timing chain?

Luckily, he was a salesman, not a mate :). He tried to show me the chain through the oil filler cap but I didn't see it. Any ideas what it might be?

Thanks for the advice. I always find when it's a subject I know sweet FA about, ask people who do know. So, natural progression on that, can anyone recommend a decent mechanic to have a look at it for me in the Ilford area of Essex?

Pretty much the conclusion I had come to, TBH. Oh well, back to scouring Autotrader and Ebay again

In my experience to be honest you are better investing the time in learning all about LR's from personal experience than listening to these thickies in garages.

I know there are a lot of professional LR people on here and I mean no disresept to the one's that REALLY know their stuff, but honestly the world in populated by Discovery "experts" like yer man there, who know absolutely nothing about the vehicles.

Buy yourself a Haynes manual and read it before looking at any more Discos, then you will know how they are put together and have the edge on 90% of the people who are trying to sell you one.

Land Rover Discovery's are great vehicles but they are not like buying an ordinary car, they are more complex with permanent 4 wheel drive etc. To get the best from the LR ownership experience you need to at least be able to service and minor repair them - if you can't/don't want to, you're back in the hands of the "experts" , is that what you want?

I'm just taking my Disco to chop up some trees......................................

I'm trying to do the learning from people on here with the patience to advise me, as well as the guys from the Arb website I use where, as you can imagine, Land Rovers are pretty commonplace. I know enough to spot rot from other cars, and have read up on here to get the usual spots to find it. I don't know the ins and outs of everything about them, which is why I asked.

Good idea like thebiglad says to buy a workshop manual. If you're set on having a disco it won't be money wasted and it'll give you plenty of knowledge about what to look for. Dodgy car salesmen will tell you anything to get a sale you'll be better off buying from an enthusiast who will be only too keen to show you the ins and outs of ownership.
