just changed the oil - everythings tight enough, no leaks anywhere, clean oil and plenty of it.

when the engine gets hot then i stop and start idling the oil light will come on then go off again with the slightest increase in revs.

is it possible this is just crud on the sensor (i did leave it far too long to change the oil so what was in there was like slightly runny tar) or is it possibly indicating pressure issues (indicating a gasket somewhere has gone)

any help at all appreciated on this one guys....... hoping it isn't a head gasket thing! (there wasn't any sign of water in the oil when it was changed or since)

taa!

Unlikely to be head gasket. 90% of the time it is the switch. You either change the switch or pay to get the oil pressure checked.

really dont want to worry you, but this needs looking at. could be just the oil switch, but it does sound a bit more ominous. ie after the hot injun?
either get the pressure checked at a garage, or buy/borrow a proper oil pressure gauge and fit it.

No expert but it sounds like either an oil pump problem or worn main bearings. I had an old 73 capri which hav very low oil pressure on idle. I cured it with a can of slick 50! - NOT SUGGESTING YOU TRY THIS. Take the advice above!

just been on a longer run than my normal run to work and it was fine...... maybe it is just the switch but i'll check it out just to make sure. the engine doesn't seem (from the guage) to be running hot at all, it stays a fraction below halfway on the temp bar all the time.

300tdi's normally have high oil pressure due to the toroidal pump, much better than on the previous 4-cyl motors, so pump problems are unlikely.
I don't think it is the switch, though that is the cheapest option. More likely getting the crud out has increased the big-end clearances.
So change the switch ASAP, just to check. If no change, get the sump off and change the bearing shells BEFORE the engine seizes up. It may be too late already, you may have to get the crank ground if it is badly worn.

hi, im having the same problem with my 94 300tdi disco, may have nothing to do with it buut my coolant seems to be disappearing slowly aswell! am a little worried now after reading this thread! just changed 2 conrods coz they bent and did head gasket at the same time. drives fine tho

Hi guys,
I had exactly the same problem on my 300tdi, (158K on th clock) - Fitted a nw oil pressure sensor £4.95, took 5 mins to do and no more flickering oil light - EASY!
