Hi

Just my 2cents worth @bout towing a caravan

When towing make sure the nose wheight is correct, not to heavy and not to light (Check your car manual and what LR recomends).
The weight must be even throughout the rest of the van.
Also increase the presure on the back tyres of the towcar.
On my Freelander the front is on 2.5bar and the back 3bar when towing. Also try and load the "boot" of the disco with something with a bit of wheight.

Hope it helps you all :D

also remember that your licence will only allow you to tow up to a certain weight and also you cant exceed more than the vehicles weight when towing.

Even thoughout?Id disagree and say load the weight over the axles.

To load the weight over the axles is correct but the nose wheight gets ditirmend by the amount of wheight you load in front but by the amount of wheight you load at the back as well because the one detirmens the other. And even the wheight over the axels must be the same on the left and right sides of the axel to keep the correct balance.
It even gets more complicated if it's a double axel van

But if the weights over the axles its not gonna be on the nose.Aint too complecated and it aint ever gonna be perfect cos caravans aint symetrical in layout.

That's true but it's impossible to load everything on the axels isnt it?
Some of it will either be a bit to the front or back and that ballance you need to get right.
If it's to much to the back it will swing and if it's to much to the front it can be to heavy for the towball and it could brake, make the car swing etc...

Broadly speaking, for someone in the UK who has a license for more than 10yrs that is not correct.

The TDi 300 Discovery is rated at GTW (Gross train weight ie with a trailer) 6300kgs, the vehicle itself at a max of 2773kgs.

The license issue states: "B+E - Motor cars or light vans with up to 9 seats and weighing up to 3500kgs towing a trailer over 750kgs"

It doesn't state a maximum but the Gross Train Weight would be the maximum on this classification of license.

Licence issues aside, you can tow up to 750kg or 50% of the kerb weight of the towing vehicle for an unbraked trailer. If it has overrun brakes, you can tow up to the manufacturers maximum towing limit with a max of 3500 kg. Discos(not MPi), Defenders and Range Rovers are all rated to tow the max of 3500kg. If you've got brakes coupled to the vehicle (air or hydraulic) you can go up to 4000kg.
If however you are towing commercially, you can tow up to 3500kg total(trailer and vehicle) Over that you need a tachograph. Anyone ever seen a Landy with a Tacho?
It means that our Defenders can only legally tow about 1250kg and we know what we are doing. Some of our customers can strap a 26' cruiser on the back of their Disco and sail off down the road never having towed before.

ok tried towing caravan with my brothers jeep thing ( oh the shame):behindsofa: loaded the same way as i had it behind the disco and it was stable but when its behind the disco its all over the place well it will be when i get the clutch fixed)! as for the towing weights most of the heavy stuff ( awning etc) was in the boot and not much in the caravan!! what tyre presures would you recommend?? my handbook says 34 psi but my local tyre shop says 40 psi!! ps think my licence is ok for towing as been a class 1 hgv driver for the past 14 yrs!!!

I found changing the air filter helped to give me at least 1 mile extra per litre of fuel. Also a recent 500+ mile journey at 65 - 75 miles an hour seemed to give better fuel returns than my normal 55 - 60 style driving.

Is faster better for fuel returns:confused:
