I bought a discovery 2 TD5 2001 with face lift body that was supposed to be drive away . started it up and it was only running on 4 cylinders. when i tried to move it it hardly moved .( and it was all over the road ) due to the fact that it was very cheap and had a good body and reasonable chassis. i decided to still buy it . Then i started with the repairs . checked injectors all were working . so replaced the wiring and sealed the plug with silicon rubber ( military stile ) . removed wheels checked brakes . even with crowbar could hardly turn hubs. so replaced all discs with range rover drilled and slotted . fitted all new brake lines and rubber hoses . fitted four new range rover calipers. replaced . springs and shockers , with standard springs and terrafirma heavy duty shockers, replaced drop links , steering rods,to find what other faults and steering box ( recon ) New bravo tyres were fitted on 18 inch rims .
the EGR valve was removed a full service was done. now while all this was taking place i was looking up on various forums and web sites what other faults were common and what else i may find . And came across two article that made my heart sink and made me wonder if i had made a bad choice. and wasted my money
the first was that it rolls so bad on corners that drivers thought it was going to tip over, funny i thought i drove these in th forces had no problem but may be they were fitted with ACE. the second was that they were no good for towing a caravan as with the extra over hang the van sways . after 9 months of of hard work going into this i took it for a test, ( now after looking at all the previous tests on the gov web site.which showed maNy faults and the same faults and advisories for over seven years i wondered if the last owner had ever done any thing to it , any way it passed first time no advisories , so i was feeling very pleased with my self
got home switched it off , came out to start it later in the day it would not start . checked battery flat as a f ***
bought a new battery and have not looked back . two days after test we were going on holiday to wales with the caravan . so i was concerned with towing and cornering . the van towed great no tail wagging and no sway when lorries or coaches passed me and in places i was doing 70 mph .after i had parked the caravan on the site we did about 500 miles touring Wales with the Disco along bendy country roads taking bends at 60 mph not once did it feel as if it was going to tip over it was like it was on a railway line
safe and precise. so i can only presume that it was due to the suspension set up and it being New so maybe those that have problems with roll need new springs and shockers plus drop links . i have done about 4000 miles to date with it 2000 towing the van get 40 mpg with it I just love My disco so much I hardly Drive my Mondeo any more, been up Hard knott pass in the lakes plus a few other passes . end of the moNth going to Skye with the van and intend to do Applecross pass, and as much of the West coast 500 that we have time for. weather it was me repaiRing it or weather it was the way it was designed ,

i can say that i have a perfect disco i have a few cosmetic items to attend to when time and money allow
