hi, i'm after a bit of help with my conversion - ive got a 1973 109 6 cylinder and a 300tdi to go in it

what i want to know is will the engine bolt up to my 6 cylinder series gearbox? and what parts will i need to make it do so ?
will it foul on the bulkhead? this seems to be an issue mentioned a few times but when i look at mine it looks like there is room

there is just too much contradictory information on the net - i'm getting fed up of searching through threads people saying one thing then someone else saying another, there doesn't seem to be that many people done it on a 6cyl

i dont mind making engine mounts even a new exhaust manifold wont be a problem - its just physically bolting the engine in position to the gearbox i am unsure of

thanks :)

last conversion i did with 6 cylinder i swapped g box bell housing for a 4 cylinder bell housing and fitted 5 bearing flywheel housing to the engine

is the 4 cyl bellhousing longer then? and if so by how much?
also would i have to swap the gearbox input shaft too?
and excuse my lack of landrover knowledge but what a 5 bearing flywheel housing

thanks

input shaft etc are the same as 4 cylinder so you could use yours in the new bell housing,i cant remember if there is any difference in length,300 tdi bell housing has support lugs on the bottom that interfere with cross member you could cut them off i suppose, bell housing will mate but not al studs will line up , all the bell housings will bolt to block holes , but as 300 has a different rear bearing seal so you need to cut out part of an earlier bell housing the series 4 cylinder box bolts fully too

thanks - whats the reason i can't use my 6 cylinder bellhousing? is it a different pcd to the 4 cylinder one? i assumed the reason people swapped was because of the length but if the input shaft is the same then it can't be much.

doesnt fit a 4 cylinder flywheel housing ,youd need a conversion plate etc, the other concern is vac pump with 300 , i just removed it as it wasnt needed but you can get electric pumps , pics to show flywheel housing difference

thanks again - so am i understanding this right?

if i swap my bellhousing to a 4cylinder one (keeping the 6cyl input shaft) i could bolt it up to my 300tdi flywheel housing - but not all the studs will line up ?
but if i keep my 6 cylinder one it wont bolt up to anything?
and if want all the studs to fit perfectly i need to swap to a '5 bearing' flywheel housing and modify it to fit the 300tdi?

basically ,the 4 cylinder g/box bell housing fits all the different flywheel housings but the later ones have less studs that align 300 with the least , with the 5 bearing 2/14 diesel fitting fully

yes that would make the g/box 4 cylinder compatible, then you have choice of what you do to the engine, thinking about it any series diesel flywheel housing would mate to the box, though by achieving a perfect fit you lose the timing pin hole but you can manage using marks on the front crank pulley

I fitted a 200tdi into a 6 pot and it does sit very close to the bulkhead but it does fit.

Was close enough to decide to move the starter loom to across the front of the engine though.

how do you mean? if i use any series flywheel housing bolted to the 300tdi it would bolt to my 6 cylinder bellhousing? or do you mean once ive fitted the 4cyl bellhousing to my gearbox?

cheers
you use 300 flywheel and series clutch,
no once you have a 4 cylinder box you need 4 cylinder flywheel housing

Do consider that there aren't many 6-cylinder series out there, and no more will ever be built. Personally I'd keep an original 6-cylinder as is, as their value will only go up.

Probably too late to say this but............................. are you sure you want to do this? It occurs to me that original or well restored Series are really going up in value - 6 cylinders while not ideal are amongst the rarest. Maybe put the effort into restoration and detailing and watch it appreciate - or sell it and convert something more common.

a few people have said that but it's not something i want (a 6 cyl petrol) tbh i didnt even realise it was a 6 cylinder until i collected it. i would swap it for a similar or better condition 4 cyl and let someone else restore it to original condition but in reality thats not very likely to happen, and i dont want the hassle of selling it and looking for and buying another - some pics of mine here https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/stood-for-20-yrs-109-series-3-resto-thread.247323/
