Was your pump pretty carped, or did you think it just needed a service? Could you tell a big difference in your Landy when it was running again?
Swarf from the internals was getting into the stop solenoid. Basically it was breaking up internally. I had it fully rebuilt. It did make a difference, although it wasn't actually running too badly in the first place. Bob gave me some good advice about reinstalling the pump (as did jamesmartin!).

That's interesting.............that it was still running not too badly. Even when breaking up internally.

By the way, I had an email from the Loch Ness car rally tonight. They raised just over £4K for the Loch Ness lifeboat and other local charities. Not bad. :)

Very informative, cheers. :D

Well, I take great exception to that remark ;) I do have a dial indicator, much to @neilly 's amusement. :D If you haven't cottoned on yet, neilly has quite a dial indicator/ dial test indicator fetish.
When you rotate the timing sprocket hub, how do the holes change diameter or do you create a smaller/larger ellipse which grips the drill bits?
After you've adjusted it a bit, is it a case of driving it to see if it's better, then adjust again on a trial an error basis?

Oh well, I do beg your pardon! I didn't know this about Neilly but I shall keep this in mind and ensure maximum recommendation of dial gauge measuring going forward for his entertainment!

So, the holes change in size because there is a larger than needed cutout, for lack of better description, on the outside (driven part) of the sprocket, so it creates more of a elliptical opening which will allow bigger or smaller drill bits to be inserted.

So on the adjusting and driving question, yes and adjust it hot, no point in timing it up cold as it will behave differently when it then heats up. I was able to feel a difference as soon as I pulled off and down the road about 25m! Once I had it feeling good I left it at that, first time I was on the motorway or up a decent hill it gave me further indication as to how it had worked out and I can say that it was good, decent continuous pull up a long incline on a motorway in 5th gear etc.

It is really so simple to do that I would not hesitate to tweak it just to experiment with different settings. I did my timing belt about 3 months ago and have not since then tweaked the timing so I suspect I may be doing this myself rather soon.

As @Al2O3 is aware,:D

I have an issue when I see people wrongly term Dial indicators as Dial test indicators and vise versa, the same with people wrongly identifying digital calipers as Vernier calipers.:eek::eek: Something that was beaten into me during my apprenticeship by hard mean toolmakers.:p

Cheers

Got you! Yes, a 'Vernier caliper' with no Vernier scale on it is a peeve of mine!

[Rant Mode = ON] The other one is resolution and accuracy, just because the display can show 0.001mm doesn't mean it is accurate to within 0.001mm! [Rant Mode = OFF]

You lot are making me feel almost normal. ;) :p You are all perfectly correct, of course. :D
