Hi all - just snapped one of my keys for my 300TDi.. am about to buy a new barrel and keys (I have another key, but the key/barrel is worn and its a pain to turn the key, i think thats why its snapped so ...)

has anyone got one here in decent nick they want to sell before I approach the crows of ebay?

Hi Kev, if you wanted to resolve the problem without spending any money you could always remove the 'leaves' from the barrel and then use your other key to operate the vehicle.

This could be a short-term solution until you get hold of another barrel and key set.

And Yes, I know it would compromise the security of the vehicle, but the doors will be locked and the immobiliser won't undo without the presence of the key fob so you should be perfectly fine.

Awesome, may well do that.

I only have 1 fob too, am i right in thinking i cant just get a used one from ebay and program it in using some key combo in the car, i need to get a programmer module?

Hi Kev I'm not 100% absolutely sure, but I'm pretty sure that with the two-button fobs they have to be programmed in.

Just don't lose your existing one and make sure it has a good battery in it :D

Key snapped... so i got a new barrel. Problem is, the new keys are not coded to the transponder. They came with a tag with a 3 digit code on, is there a way i can put the 300tdi into program mode and register the new key?

There is another way i know.. involving half the old key and tape but I dont want to go down that route.

Hi Kev, as you know the Key/fob combo are physically 2 separate parts - the key blade and the remote fob.

As far as I can recall there is nothing electronic in the key blade itself, it's the fob that has all the 'sparky' bits, so if you put you new key and your existing fob together on one ring, that you should enough to tell the immobiliser that you are the "good guy" rather than a thief and let you go on.

Nah, its in the black bit of the key, nothing to do with the fob.

I know this as i had the car running by holding the snapped key on the transponder and the new key in the barrel. The fob wasnt anywhere near the ignition.

What I said referred to a 2 button fob set-up, but I think you've stated that you have a 1 button fob with yours???

If this is the case, I believe it is possible to do a re-syncing of your new fob.

If u have a single button remote and the battery is ok then try the following:

1. Starting conditions: ignition off, doors unlocked,
bonnet switch depressed.

2. Carry out instructions 3. to 9. within 8 seconds.

3. Switch ignition ON.

4. Switch ignition OFF.

5. Lock doors.

6. Unlock doors.

7. Release bonnet switch.

8. Switch ignition ON.

9. Switch ignition OFF.

If alarm is correctly accessed, horn will sound and
LED will light. It is now possible to programme two
handsets of correct frequency to vehicle alarm ECU.
This must be carried out within two minutes.

10. Press and hold down button on first handset until
dash LED flashes.

11. Repeat instruction 10. for second handset.

12. The LED will extinguish if both been initialised correctly.
