Right my 300Tdi Disco seems to have gone bang.

Topped up the water today after thinking it had an air lock, topped it up through the bleed plugs then topped up the expansion tank as neccessary. Went laning after, erratic temp guage- would rise to the top then fall like a stone.
On the way home, 50mph on a dual carriageway climbing a hill, turbo seemed very noisy- could hear it whistling on boost more than normal. Coming down the hill it loses power, very vauge throttle response, engine dies whern clutch down. Coasted into a layby, egine failed to turn over, then seemed to free up- turns over freely now, more freely than normal but fails to fire.

When I lifted the bonnet and removed the oil filler cap there was a lot of smoke pouring out, header tank very hot to touch aswell but theres still water in it?

Im no mechanic but am thinking the rings are ruined judging by what I read on Google, can a diesel engine be compression tested and how can I diagnose the fault?
Im no mechanic but dont mind tinkering to get to the bottom of it....

Any hep much appreciated :)

Header tank is about half full, havent checked the bleed screws to see if theres water in the rad and thermo housing. Was more concerned about getting it home!
