some where over the rainbow
hi all,
not posted for a while.

my discovery is a m reg 1994 2.5 300tdi auto.

my problem is...

whilst driving on normal roads, dual carridgeways etc drive as she should,
temp needle stays about half way........

but on a motorway at steady 50 ish ok, increase speed and after a while the temp needle creaps up to 3/4 or just under the red.

never boils over and is i slow down the temp needle goes back down to half way.

i have had this problem for aprox 10 months but never boiled up.

changed the thermostat when i first had her and still the same.
i was thinking of cleaning the intercooler and changing the rad as the old one doesn't look the best.

i have changed the anti freeze when i changed the themostate, but no change.

i was wondering if any one had any suggestions before i started replacing parts. had the head gasket checked when i first purchased the disco,
no problems and nothings changed since.

suggestions welcome especially if any one had similar problem.
been looking for the last hour or so and couldn't find anything.

thanks and all suggestions welcome.

I have a similar problem with the Doris' MX5. Will thrash around backroads all day but try and sustain anything over 3500 revs for any length of time and the temperature just goes up.

The advice I was given to look into this problem was to check/replace the following;
Radiator cap
Thermostat
Water pump
Radiator

They're in that order just because of price.

My suggestion would be to check out your radiator. Maybe, a backflush will help but if the fins have rotted out, then there may not be enough surface area to cool sufficiently.

Hope this helps

hi ya,
i was thinking of changing the radiator next,
especially as all the others have already been done,
had new water pump when i had it, changed cap and thermostat,

i know the radiator odesnt look the best so will give that a go....

any one have suggestions of the best places to go, and prices.
i live in west midlands, closest place is j craddocks....
looking about £100

is that price about right or can i get better price else where??

any suggestions welcome.....

thanks mark

has no one any advise????

where to get rad from???? prices etc????

before i pay £100 for a rad????

Hi Mark, BEFORE you start spending, why don't you try back-flushing the rad to see if there are any blockages or sludge in it?

Also, make SURE that there are no obstructions in front of the rad such as mud, leaves etc blocking the airflow through the rad. DO NOT use a high pressure hose on the rad or you'll damage it !!

Rads are available just about everywhere but I tend to use Paddocks because they've always been good to me and I've never had any problems with their stuff.

Cheers
Dave

hi dave,
probably just going to replace the radiator any way, but will flush the system anyway.
the old radiator really doesn't look that good........ will possibly disintergrate with the hose pipe..!!!!

looks like the avarage price from, j craddocks, paddocks and others is about £100...........

i was going to give the intercooler a good clean too, never got around to that whilst i was on the go last time.
what did you clean your out with when you did yours.?

think i may have a leak from the heater matrix too !!!!!!
the drivers cise carpet has a stain on the bell housing by my left foot..

what whey like to change??????

looks like i will be doing another service too by the time i get round to doing it. never hurts any way..... less than £10 to do as i already have enough oil from last time....

i wanted to sort this problem before the winter sets in....

i thought you last few emails were great passed them about.....

cheers mark

Hi Mark, re the intercooler, I cleaned mine by filling the inside with white spirit, agitated it a bit and then left it overnight.

Next morning agitated some more, poured out all the liquid and left in the "sun" to dry.

When I reinstalled it I connected the bottom hose but left off the top hose intercooler to inlet manifold, off, and started the engine. I did this to ensure no fumes were blown into the engine.

After a while reconnected the top hose and all was well - or better, to be honest !!

Cheers
Dave
