Hi there, my 1997 300tdi (non edc) has a little problem which isn't actually an issue for me other than I know it's not 100% correct so it bugs me!

When started from cold she will fire up first time without much hassle but she always puffs out one small bit of white smoke and if cold she will idle a little low (500RPM ish) for about 30 secs to a minute, then she idles fine at about 750RPM.

It annoys me only because the gear stick rattles on startup because of the low idle. It's really not a huge issue as I said but it bugs the heck out of me as I like things right.

I have done som reading and think its possibly being caused by the cold start advance mechanism on the injection pump. The symptom of a puff of white smoke suggests incorrect timing from cold as really i should expect a puff of black smoke from cold? If the cold start advance was knackered would it show this kind of thing? Anyone got any idea where it is or how it works? I suspect this as if you start from cold and drive up the shops about 2 mins away, on coming back to the car 5 mins later it will fire up fine then sometimes idle low for 1 second then it suddenly shoots up to 750RPM idling smooth as; as if something suddenly kicked in like the cold advance thing.

I've read a small piece on it in the workshop manual but there's no pics or anything. Would a weak lift pump exhibit this kind of symptom? Any help gratefully received!

PS she has new glow plugs and I get 10.5 v at each for 5/6 secs with the ign on, new fuel filter, injection cleaner just gone in, newish fuel filter, cleaned intake, EGR sorted, she runs well and doesn't have any flat spots power seems ok no smoke on driving around etc...
