Hello,

I have a 300tdi auto and as of yesterday the gearbox is sticking in first when it is cold, when it is warm it is fine. I had the filter changed about 3000 miles ago at which point the oil was also changed (the half that can be changed).
A few days ago i topped up the gb oil level as it was slightly low. I used a differnet oil than i have before, could this be the problem?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as i am currently in St Petersburg as part of a round the world tour!

Thanks

Dave

Hi Disco Dave, the problem you are now encountering is a very common one indeed and often starts after changing the filter screen.

Apparently when the filter is changed it can dislodge crud in the 'box which then finds it's way into the gubbins - sorry for the jargon.

Have a look on the Ashcroft Transmissions site for more info.

My advice would be to change the oil again, not the filter, to see if that improves/dislodges things.

Cheers & good luck

Dave

With ref to thebiglad's info this is the link to Ashcrofts Q&a Ashcroft Transmissions

As for using a 'different oil' that's worrying it should be to ATF Dexron 2D or an equivalent spec, the same oil which u would also use for the power steering. Most oil manufactures do updated ATF's which will meet the old Dexron 2 spec.

Getting Dexron II is difficult now as it has moved on to Dexron III. Same stuff, just evolved.

Cheers

Thanks for the help guys! My non-exixstant russian makes discribing the problem a bit hard and supprisingly the 'usefull phrases' section in th eghuide book doesnt cover this topic!
Hopefully it is just that then, I have just managed to stumble accross a car place and aparently in russia they are still using a lot of the dexron II, i had 4 different brand choices of the stuff!
Fingers crossed!

Hi Dave, Castrol now call Dexron IID TQ-D and for Dexron III it's now TQ Dexron 3. Other oil companies also seem to call ATF by another name now.

So it's available if if u still wish to use it I did notice that both oils are the same price per ltr in the uk that is..

A thing I did notice on the Castrol site was the warning that Dexron IIE must not be used, not that I have ever seen that one about..

Regards

Thanks for that mate.

I got my atf from Carrefour, and they still call it Dexron III, so hopefully I don't need to think about it for a couple of years.

Cheers

Okay, i changed the oil and the problem carried on, I then took the car to Land Rover in Moscow where they agreed that it was the governor valve that was sticking. It worked great for about a day but then started sticking again.
I have been starting the car and putting it in 'D' for 10 minutes before I set off in the morning and that seem to be letting it warm up enough.
Is the problem likely to get worse or just stay as it is now? I am currently in Omsk in Siberia and am heading to Mongolia today, i cant imagine the availability of land rover spares is too great in these parts!
My current plan is to soldier on, see what happens and hope for the best...

I think there is every chance that you will damage the gearbox if you continue to do this - not reccomended.

Good luck
