Can I also ask how I go about tracking down the lack of cruise control btw ?? Light comes on, on the switch but is non responsive to the wheel controls and doesnt seem to activate, did a search and someone mentions vacuum pipe but how do I actually test this stuff ?

open bonnet and look on passenger side near bulkhead

Can anyone tell me what the grey eletrical plug is for please in this pic, and is the other part the cruise control unit btw ?

Also just behind the battery are a couple of other connections seemingly connected to nothing ??

Hi there Mark, just to put you in the picture, LR put the same electrical loom in all models, so there are almost always spare plugs floating about.

Don't know about the first pic but the plugs in the second pic are for front driving lamps.

Cheers
Dave

Thanks buddy, usefull to known when I hook up some additional lighting maybe then.

@ Fanatic

Are you saying thats where the Vacuum pipe is, passenger side bulkhead ? does that come across from the vacuum pump drivers side ??

As I understand the cruise control mechanism is in your first pic.
Mine doesn't work, same as you described, and I couldn't find any split vacuum pipe so interested to see if you sort it..

Update re: Auto changing problem.

Ok, after some more driving it now seems that actually the gearbox doesn't drop back to second gear after selecting 3rd, it is merely leaping between 2nd and 3rd, ie the revs rise sharply between the two ratios giving the illusion it dropped a cog momentarily.

Any ideas chaps ??

Thanks again.

Mark.

(on a side note, is it hard to convert an auto to manual as a last resort ??)

could you no just get an auto gearbox specialist to check it over and set the kickdown cable, think i would be doing that first rather than converting to manual.

Hi Mark, can't remember if you've checked the autobox oil level yet?

Dave

As best I can, I dont get a solid definitive line on the dip stick tho, always seems to be a smear of fluid and worried about over filling it !!

Would the gearbox still work if it had below minimum in it ?

Hi Mark, as I'm sure you know ATF is red in colour so the level on the stick should be clearly visible. If it is not, you almost certainly don't have enough fluid in there.

However a good way to establish this and to do good by your car is to change the autobox fluid and refill until the level - when using the correct procedure - is between the 2 marks on the stick.

Overall the autobox contains 9 ltrs of fluid but you will only be able to get out about 4.5 ltrs due to the way the torque converter holds oil.

The box will still work if oil is a little bit low, but just not properly. It has to lose a lot of oil to stop it working at all.

dont want to hyjack this But there was advice that the kickdown cable should not be disconnected
WHY should the kickdown cable not be disconnected on my 300Tdi auto M reg .It does not have cruise control .and the throttle cable goes straight to the injector pump.
The kd cable stuck on ,pushed the kd cable sheath in engine compartment backwards and heard / felt a movement ,test drive then showed 4 th gear was being selected .Afterwards have disconnected the kd cable at the injector pump .
Can i run it without damage ??? has anyone else done this

What i forgot to put in the previous post was that the first drive had high revs and would not select 4th gear .Also when slowing down from 4000 revs the box would drop a gear and rev even more .

you need to refit one for correct operation and longevity of box ,box works on pressure ,kd cable has an input to this ,wont be good for your clutch packs running without one

Its clearly visible, but not as a solid definitive level, more as a weak streak of fluid tho :(

Good oil should be almost cherry red. If it's pale as you describe, it's almost certainly not been changed at the proper service interval (possibly even 2 or 3 changes have been missed) and wont be doing its job properly.

Reckon you should look at a new filter while you're at it. If they've been lazy with the oil, probably never changed the filter either.

Kick Down cable is wrongly named, yes it does do kick down but it is also how the gearbox senses throttle position for normal changes.
