You've probably heard it all before :eek:

What mpg can I expect from a full to the brim tank on a 300tdi Auto? Mainly A road driving? Just trying to work it out as I'm off to a few places in a few months time and would like to predict costs and how much biodiesel I'll need to make.

The variables are many.........tyre choice, driving style, service history etc etc but if you've got big wheels/knobbly tyres on don't expect to get much over 23ish mpg. It might be worth looking on ebay for a set of standard wheels with road/AT tyres for the time you are doing a lot of miles.
 
the difference tyres make is quite surprising, I get 25mpg with my muds on and 30mpg with my road tyres.
 
When I roughly work mine out it's about 23 mpg.

That's on a standard truck with a Decat and erg removal, running on standard size AT tyres.
 
Last time I towed the van down wales and back on a full tank ,did 250 miles towing 1200 kg and the rest solo.The light came on at 420 miles and it worked out about 24 mpg. mines an auto .
 
Please tell me why you all wait till the light comes on?Surely filling an almost empty tank disturbs all the crap in the tank. Also with a tank at near empty in this weather creates condensation inside the tank.I never go below half tank which also means in case of emergency runs do not need to look for a filling staion in a hurry.
Anyway thats my tuppence worth.
I get 22/23mpg with local mileage and 28/30 long distance keeping as near as poss to 60mph

Interesting theory, but if there is condensation occuring inside a fuel tank the only place the water vapour could be coming from is the fuel itself. The only other place is the air that displaces the fuel as the level drops.Even the amount of water vapour in the air in an empty fuel tank would be a very tiny amount. Thats my theory anyway. Is Brian Cox on line to sort this out ! :D
 
ive got the county import box standerd and my fuel light is never of
round the doors i get 56 mile to 20pound and thats at 1.31 a litre i think ive worked that out at about 16mpg i need help:doh:
 
When I had my '98 TDi 300 auto Disco, I ran it for 16,000mls and over that mileage the car averaged 33mpg. It was std apart from De-cat and De-EGR. It had road tyres for most of that time.

I can see the point about the Crap in the bottom of the tank, but as far as the condensation part is that not athing that you will never get rid of cause as soon as you take out of the tank mosit air is draged in and pushed out wether its full or not, as the fuel sloshes bout in the tank.

Is this what the sedimentor is for as well, to remoev any rouge water?

so if you keep running your tank low then there must be an end to the crap that gets lifted and after a couple of services and cleaning of the sedimenter then their tanks will be cleaner than yours.

I run my 110 close to empty a lot but the tank was drained, cleaned and sorted while i had a new crossmember fitted :)

back to the OPs question my import used to get around 50 miles to £10 whatever that works out to be (mainly dual carriageways and counrty roads).
 
well i just had my best MPG ever on my car! Mileage - Land Rover Discovery ES, 300Tdi, 1997, Auto

If i'd had regular size tyres, my odometer would have recorded 26.05 mpg!

As i have larger tyres, it actually recorded 24.55 mpg. I also have a winch bumper, winch, 2" lift, 245/75R16 tyres, spotlights, steering guard, rear tube bumper, tow bar, decat, de-egr, and quite a lot of waxoyl i'm carrying around on the underside now too. oh, and it's done 152,000 miles!

Not too bad, I don't think...
 
Hi All,

I'm relatively recent owner of a 1998 Disco 1 300tdi Auto with 138,000 on the odo. I'm living in central London but get out to the coutnry most weekends. The truck is in fairly good order with EGR blanked and new oil everywhere except the transfer box. I have had a good run on a 90 mile trip when I first bought the disco of 35+, I used to run Yota's and Petrol ford 4x4's and although I find the disco quite pedestrian by comparision there is no doubt that it has great consumption and far more capable off road.

With a heavy foot (and no patience) this weekend the 220 mile trip to Wales and subsequent running about with 7 people, none of whom are particulalry small, the Disco gave me 27.5 over 420 miles, The run home at a steady 65 (2.5k revs) yielded a very healthy 35mpg. A few weeks back having completed most of mileage in and around zone 1 & 2 of london I had 24mpg.

Guess mile by mile I get high 20's/ early 30's. Going on a long old run through France next week, will post the mpg and see how it goes from there as I'll be heavily laden with wine and camping gear.

Think if Richard does not mind I'll plagerise his spred sheet and report back in a few months to let you know how I get on.
