All Disco autos 'bonk' to one degree or another when selecting a gear from neutral or Park, I find it helps if you put your foot firmly on the brake pedal before you select a gear.

When was the last time the g/box oil was changed? It's scheduled to be done every 2 yrs or 24,000 mls.

it was done about 7 k ago year and a bit.. it is a big clonk! only seems to be reverse. do you know anything about the whinning even does it in neutral.

Jay572 The bonk/clonk on autos is coming from the transfer box they all do that, just as the RRC did untill they were fitted with the new chain driven Borg Warner transfer box and a viscous coupling back in the late 1980s gone was the clonk and gone was the diff lock... It's a shame LR never fitted a BW box to disco.

Some recon transfer boxes whine, also a lot of owners have experience a disco leaking water through the sunroof. There' s lots or posts on this, so do a search.

Regards

I've just done all the fluids in my Disco Tdi 300 auto so I paid particular attention, on the roadtest afterwards, to any noises - there were NONE. No whining, banging clanking nothing.

Hi jay, thanks for your P M

The oil spec is GL4 EP80/90 or u can use straight EP90 gear oil.
2.3 ltr for the transfer box and 1.7 ltr for each of the front and rear diffs.

u can go the synthetic route if u think your disco would benefit, have a look at this link 4x4 Store

Regards
