300 Tdi Rebuild

I claim no special gifts or experience in engine building but, isn't the engine still running in then perhaps ?

I've just had the lovely experience of running in my new engine and @ 1000miles its still burning oil but i'm hammering the crap out of it whenever i can which is harder than i thought, using the trailer and hills as much as possible. Although still burning oil, but much less so when hot and chuggs away merrily when cold. For a 200tdi i'm not too concerned, but should I at this stage ? I dunno but i do know that when i reach 3k or more id expect the oil burning to be minimal and even less so at 5k. But again it might take 10k, i don't really know yet. Is it a defined range ?

How many miles have you done ?

Mine has done over 10K now

How much oil are you burning? Have you measured it per 100 miles or per 200 miles etc?

Not measured mine yet, but you can smell it when it's hot and you can see it when cold out of the exhaust.
Im topping it up but also im aware there's a leak at the oil filter flange. Still fault finding at the moment.

At 10 k i sincerely hope mine will be done run in !
I do remember the engine builder chirping on about how 'important' and 'critical' the honing was for the 200tdi, and presumably all engines. Apparently you have to get it 'just right'. Anyway he had all the fandangled machines for that so i'm guessing he had it all set up right.

I do hope you get it sorted Al2o3, would be nice however to get someone to diagnose conclusively what is actually the problem rather than the throw parts and money at it.

Maybe a flat out italian tune up on the motorway for a few hours is in order ? Just done that with our new-ish car we bought and it's done the world of good.

I have a picture of the honing....... hold on.

Now added yours for comparison, they look the same

Wow! Thanks for posting that, I really appreciate it. I wonder if your honing marks are a bit deeper than mine? Not much in it though! :)

it's hard to compare properly but at least its not completely way off.
Yeah, that's true. However, I don't know if a small difference will have a big effect. If you know what I mean?
Having said that, what about an engine that has 150k on it? Why aren't those using 350ml of oil every 280 miles?

Well, the Mrs has done 223 miles since the 15W40 went in last weekend.
New oil was half way between markers last weekend. So, not too bad. Early days though.

Not that I'd want to start an oil-off, but a 15w vs a 10w would theoretically only improve a standing leak, as at operating temperature it is only very marginally more viscous than a 10-40, it being entirely mineral based might make a difference over time mind.

What actually is the difference in litres between max and min on the dipstick? think you've said before but i can't remember

Yeah, I know, I've looked at the viscocity v Temp comparison charts. Worth a try though. I've read the molecules of the mineral oil are more complex with longer chains etc. Remember. I'm clutching at straws. :D
I don't think I've said about bottom to top levels. From my top ups I'd reckon about 750ml.

End of week 2 and Landy has done 482 miles. Oil level has dropped a bit. Put 150ml in, but it didn't quite bring the level up to half way. Another 50ml did the job, so 200ml in 482 miles. Early days, but seems better than before.

It's taken 200ml to get the oil back to half way again. It's done 235 miles this week. Previous reading was after two weeks.
This is oil in the top intercooler pipe
(My phone won't upload pics anymore. Not sure if it's the phone or website. I'll try again later)
