i still cant find info this "pot" i understand how it works but i cant find what im supposed to be looking at or for i may sound thick at this but have never had to deal with this sort of thing and dont even know what im looking for under the bonnet only diagram in haynes about this just show goes into the edu ( if thats what its called) but only in picture form

Have you downloaded Rave yet?

Hi biglad ive looked at car and cleaned all conectors to do with ecu unit, now i think i found the "pot" as i did abit research is it the bit that is on the acclerator pedal next to the ecu as manual says its also called the throttle posistion sensor is this correct and if it is a part to do with the ecu which 1 would make it produce the white smoke when it splutters on???? hope this makes sense

With the engine ticking over, and using your hand to operate the throttle pedal slowly press down on it and note exactly what happens at what revs.

This white smoke business, I don't remember you mentioning it before - is it something new?

Dave

throttle pot wouldnt cause white smoke ,white smoke is unburnt diesel or water depending on smell and whether it lingers (fuel) or dissapates stright away(water)it can be caused by incorrect timing (cam belt slipped )valves not opening (fault in valve cap ,pushrod, follower etc)or poor fuel system (injectors ,insufficient fuel )

yeah white smoke always been there bellows of it when it first broke down and spluttering on i thought i put this in my first post sorry if i didnt :(
But this is the thing if i go out this morning it will fire with no problem and rev nice and clean no smoke at all like it used to be but after about 10-20 secs it starts losing power and spluttering then it wont rev at all but ticks over (just) then eventually it will stall after a good few mins sometimes 2 mins sometimes it will tick and splutter for 10 mins, fuel tank was drained completerly and fresh diesel put in bleed sytem and fuel is feeding to all components e.g lift pump, fuel filter, injector pump and injectors and some in the return to elminate the fuel, cleaned all conections that are governed by the ecu with electrical spray but all looked ok anyway, also clean air filter and fuel filter this has got me truely stumped one thing i did try when car was running i disconnected the throttle sensor inside the engine bay and instead of ticking over at 800rpm it jumped to 1000 rpm with engine warning light coming on, and ticked over a little better but not much?????? i just dont know my head is battered and cant afford to take to garage to get sorted need to get it running as need car for family and work

It's a great shame you didn't tell us about the white smoke, especially as it "white smoke always been there bellows of it when it first broke down and spluttering on"- that's a really important clue.

As James said if it's predominantly steam (water related) that takes us down one track - if it's unburnt fuel that takes us down a completely diagnostic route.

Are you losing any coolant from the header tank?

Have you had any work on the cambelt recently?

id check timing ,check all valves open fully ,all physical reasons before getting any faults on ecu, sensor side read ,injection side isnt possible to check at home apart from good clean air free fuel available at pump

no im not losing any water or any in the oil or fuel and my cam belt was done last year and i upgraded the pulleys too as timing belt slipped about 7 teeth off the belt and bent push rods but went to garage to get fuel pump timing done as i knocked it out of sync when doing belt

But must say it has no check engine light on at all when it does bellow smoke, and this only happens when i start it and it runs fine, i keep it about 2500 rpm and it starts to splutter on and bellows smoke then has no accleration when pushing on pedal, even when it is just ticking over it will not move forward as no power to do it

how do you know its right now ,you need to reduce possibilities to end up with fault

It's sounding more and more like a timing problem to me.

With the EDC cars the fuelling system has an electronic advance on the timing, which comes into play during the initial stages of engine start.

This is why the engine will start but soon goes off the boil.

I would check the cambelt positions very carefully by removing the timing chest cover plate and winding the engine over manually with a socket and driver on the crankshaft nut.

sounds like air in the fuel lines to me but for some reason you don't want to rule this possibilty out and just want to look at the complicated things.

Hi hifly ive bleed the system so should be none but dont think this could happen as ive never tampered with the fuel lines till it broke :(

you don't have to tamper with the fuel lines to draw air in. Corrosion in the pipes as they come out of the tank would do it. It's an easy thing to check. Fit a length of clear pipe between the lift pump and the filter, start the engine and look for bubbles in the pipe. Always start with the simple things.
