Hi guys. Just bought a really nice nick 90 as a non runner with fitting v8 in mind. Its got a disco 200tdi fitted and was maybe thinking about having a go at fixing it. Just wondering if anybody has any idea what thr prob might be and what parts i might need.
Symptoms_
running on 3 cylinders.
Alot of blue/white (can't really be sure) smoke from exhaust.
Also alot of smoke from Rocker breather and dip stick.

I thought it would most prob be rings but that don't really explain missing.
Someone else said head gasket?

Any ideas??

Its really weird, starts first turn and idles and revs up fine but just sounds like missing a cylinder. Also no air in the water and isn't loosing fluids. Can't be sure what the previous owner did to it but i know it was driven hard. Just thinking maybe over fill of oil maybe, it looks quite high. Guess i'll split the engine tomorrow and have a look.

Just a little more info i remembered.

No air filter, don't know how long its been like that.
Smokes all the time starting, idling, reving up&down.
No pressure in water.
Alot of pressure in oil. Even pushing out around roker cover bolts!

Heard alot of stuff about timing or injectors. Can anyone rule these out?

Pressure in oil is almost always worn/broken piston rings cracked piston, blocked crankcase breather, blocked oil pickup filter (in Sump) or a blown headgasket pressurising an oilway and forcing oil and/or smoke out of the fillercap and or dipstick tube A blown head gasket doesn't always result in changes to the water/cooling system.

Blown head gasket on no 4 cylinder into pushrod tube hole is quite common would pull the head off and check before comdemming engine

k looks like head gasket then. there are 3 types on paddocks. 1 notch, 2 notch & 3 notch??? whats difference? Think its the earliest 200 from hor j reg. Any ideas?

Right got the head off and found cylinder 1 (closest to rad) to have a bit of oil in it. The head gasket although brittle looked ok and there were no obvious signs of leaking anywhere. Now here's the weird bit, there is a thread cutting tap in the piston!! There is a mark on the piston and head where it has obiously been sideways and then it looks almost as if it has been screwed into the piston. It goes in perfectly straight!! There is also another mark in the head where this is. I'm just wondering what damage this might have done. It must have been in there for ages without problem. Anyone reckon that this has knackered the piston there are no visible cracks in the top and the bores are spot on. should i just try a new head gasket and see if its ok? Is it likely that a fair amount of oil would pass the gasket like that? I would've thought it'd only be a drip.

Any ideas gratefull.

Ha Ha. yeah i'll be whippin it out in the morn. Quite how it got there and screwed itself in so neatly is a mystery to me.

P.S who's idea was it to put that bloody ladder thing in the sump?
