Booked in with local specialist next week but thought I’d put the symptoms on here to see if anyone else has had the same issues. It’s a 2001 that’s covered 116k. Stage 2 Storm remap. Symptoms are:
  • Hard to start when cold takes two or three goes plus some throttle.
  • Lacks power for the first minute or so.
  • Light Blue smoke on startup then on hard acceleration
  • Whirring turbo (may be normal just not heard one this loud before)
  • Engine clatters a little on acceleration (again may just be me being over sensitive to every noise)
Reading it back I’m hoping these are all related otherwise it becomes an even more worrying list!

Oh and fuel pump, filters and battery all replaced in last 3 months. These symptoms were present before.

Any thoughts appreciated otherwise I’ll update after it’s been looked at next week.

Hi I’m sure you are probably sorted by now, but what condition is your battery, fuel filter, injector harness? What ever you do don’t touch the throttle when starting a td5, even if it takes a bit longer to get going otherwise you are going to hurt your engine even more

Thanks for that, I’ll be laying off the throttle on startup then! Just started it now without and it takes a while, gets progressively faster until it finally catches and fires up.

Fuel pump, filter and battery were all replaced in January. I’d discounted anything to do with injectors because it idles fine once started.

Have you checked the glow plugs? Mine were all U/S!
One was open circuit two were dead short and one had a high resistance

Replaced them (easy if you have a long 1/4 inch extension with a universal joint on it plus a glow plug socket)

Was better starter after that and no smoke on startup either.

No haven’t checked the plugs but they’re on my list as it fires up fine when the engines warm.
