"3 Amigoes" Illuminated on dash, Front Right Speed Sensor Code

Hi Everybody,

Apologies this is my first post, I have seen how helpful everyone has been in similar issues, this is a last resort in afraid as the car in question is starting to get the better of me.

The car ( Land Rover Freelander jan2002) came in to have some faults rectified. One of them being the ABS light and friends being on.

I plugged the car straight into the diagnostics (Delphi) which indicated a problem with the front right sensor.

I go ahead and take a look at the sensor, and notice that there used to be a reluctor ring fitted. Now this cars sensors are inside the hub aimed at the inside of the driveshaft, what I beleive may have happened is that the car has had a 2nd hand driveshaft fitted from a previous model. This was basically confirmed when I removed the driveshaft joint, and noticed a slight difference in shape to the N/S. Also, it had worn away slightly at the ABS sensor.

So, I replace both the outer CV joint and ABS sensor with brand new aftermarket parts. I delete the codes, the lights disappeared and I thought it was job done, nice and straight forward.

That is until I go and take it for a test drive, when after reaching around 10mph they all reappear. Plug the car back in, and the same fault comes up again.

So, I thought, maybe there is a problem with the driveshaft joint. Knowing how simple they are to do, I swapped the drivers side joint (brand new) with the problem free passenger side. Delete the codes again and drive off. The light stayed off around 1/2 a mile, but then came back on again.

So this means the CV joint is ok, and the sensor is brand new.

Then, I realised I had the live data function for this model. I took it for a drive, and both sensors are working at pretty much the same rate, both displaying the correct speed.

Next thing I'll do is record the live data on a journey at varying speeds.

But does anybody have any idea why the lights won't stay off, it's driving me abit insane!

Apologies, it's a 52 plate, could swear I saw something that mentioned jan2001 when I logged onto car earlier, unless there's something more sinister here like an ECU change.

Try a new abs sensor. I had strange problems like you..until I found a set of sensors the car liked...or swap them left to right if your faults staying on the one side all the time.

Cheers for the reply, they are stuck in very tight, so I'll have a go at taking the passenger side out later, trying not to snap it.

Right, so have swapped the sensors over, so essentially the new parts are on the passenger side and the two old parts (previously working) have been put on the drivers side.

And.... It's still coming up with the same code! Wiring looks fine, just can't get my head around this one! Does it need to be driven a fair few miles to fully assure itself it's fixed or something?

so here you can see me driving the car. the left wheel is quite smooth, whereas the right side drops off every now and again?

I am now thinking the problem may lie with the wheel bearing? is the pick up on there atall? cant see how the senso reaches it, but ill give it all a good clean!

Yep the signal looks like it's dropping out from your graph....there is a reluctor ring around the drive shaft where the sensor picks up the signal...maybe it's broken

Thanks, I beleive this model has a slightly different system as the are no reluctor rings fitted, I've got a feeling that it picks up signal from the wheel bearing, which may have been pressed in backwards or something, I'm going to fit another wheel bearing if I can confirm this.

That is a bad connection, either inside or outside the sensor, not a bad reluctor ring etc etc.

Hi, thing is though, I've swapped the sensors over and the fault stats on the drivers side. Connections seem fine, I suppose I could get rid of the plastic connected and just solder the wires together to eliminate that.

The inference is then that the connection is faulty, not the sensor.

Hi I had the same fault on my 53 reg v6 yours will have the active abs system . Mine had been fitted with the wrong drive shaft I changed the drive shaft and the sensor drove down the road a bit and the lights came back on . I had to change the wheel bearing as the abs sensor had been forced against the face of the bearing and damaged the magnetic strip that on the bearing . Fitted New bearing reset fault codes done 500 miles no lights abs works so dose hill descent and Trac control

There we go then. As suspected, the wheel bearing was also to blame. Cheers for comments guys.
