I have just bought a discovery 2003 td5 manual and seems when changing into 2nd and 3rd it crunches a little bit, 3rd is the worst and does it every time nearly, but 2nd if I keep the stick pushed to the left it doesn’t do it as bad, has anyone got any clue what this could be? Been told some sort of bush but I’d have no idea

+1^
(into neutral - pause - into the next gear.)
Or learn how to double declutch, which is great fun.;)
The second weird symtpom implies the lever is sightly misaligned, but yes worn snyc rings.
Not worth getting the box out for, I'd a said!
Maybe OP has not driven many old skool cars before.
I learned how to DDC as a lad and use it a lot, having been a dedicated banger motorist since the 70s!:):):)

Welcome to the asylum forum.!!!

As long as it crunches only on gear change and goes well while it's in gear then IMO it's something at the selector mechanism: bias plate/springs(nr 38, 36), worn lower lever ball(nr 39), gear change pivot bush(FRC9985, this one used to crack, nr 40) or selector yoke bush(FTC2203 this one is beneath the other one and harder to access,nr 9 here https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.com/parts/index/part/id/L5.L5J.L5J01.L5J01060/brand/land-rover/), worth a check at the selector mechanism before blaming the gearbox internals

Never had any crunching of gears when my bias springs/plate were knackered.... just a floppy knob.
Which means what? ...cos i had crunchy gear change with the nr 40 bush cracked... so can you rule it out from your experience with the bias plate?.... maybe you should read again my previous reply whics is more complex

Theres a couple of choices here, change the gearbox oil and add some molyslip to it and check the linkage for wear, or take the gearbox out and have it re conditioned, it will need a flywheel and clutch as well, and maybe a starter while its all off, but no doubt there will be other things - just depends on how far you want to go with it and if you become infected with land rover disease, which is continually throwing good money at the thing when your brain is telling you that you daft as you never get to the end part........

Google difflock forum, then look at their shop, find the syn r380 gearbox oil and buy some (not cheap) transformed my d2 r380 from a piece of crunchy/grindy crap to a really nice box.

Hi Stanley & Greetings from Paris !
I own a defender TD5 year 2003. If I up-shift quickly with high RPM from 1st to 2d, or from 2d to 3d, I feel a crunch/grind in my hand (not so loud to hear it in the vehicle, I can just feel it with my hand).

If I leave the RPM/rev normal, and leave a 1 second pause on Neutral between these gears, all is fine.

No crunch when downshifting. The gearbox runs with new MTF94 oil.

Is this a normal behavior for a R380 ? Are we supposed to UP shift slowly with these gearboxes, losing momentum ?

Losing momentum is not an issue on flat road, but annoying climbing a slope.

I was wondering if this is a characteristic of the R380 gearbox even when it was brand new back in 2003.

Many thanks for your help and feedback !

Julien

I can only talk generically as my TD5 Disco is auto, but with my 300tdi manual Disco 1 just taking your time did it OK, or double declutching.
Others with more knowledge of the box will pop on. But it isn't a car so you can't drive it like a car.
Normally upshifting all you need to do when double declutching is to quickly lift off the clutch then back onto it when the gears are in neutral, you only need to rev for downshifting. I have to admit that it is a little strange that you are not getting this on downshifting as well.

Hello Julien,

I have a TD5 discovery Landmark, from the last batch in April 2004 and i have had it since it was almost new and yes the gearbox does not change smoothly all the time, its better after a long run when its warmed up and its improved with the molyslip, also pushing the clutch pedal down further helps when cold, my big regret is that when it went in for a re chassis and re build at simmonites i did not have them change it to automatic

Just a thought, if you live in Paris, how are you getting on with the Crit'air situation?
Our place is fortunately too far from Toulouse or any other place with clean air zones and is too rural for it to be a problem. Unless of course you want to go to them! ;)
