They mainly went to the Italians for the Carabinieri but there are a few that have made it back over here.

The mpi . Seem to remember bgb rescuing one for lzir

I certainly did. ;)

It didnt have the guts to get through the bloop and he got stuck!

A landie mag a while ago said they are pretty good around town and on motorways etc ( they were looking at one of the Italian police ones). Would imagine they are pants at towing anything or going up hills! Not sure about general off roading. So, could be ok if he just wants it to mess about town in?

In a Disco, the Mpi does need to be worked hard to get it going when towing heavy loads, but offroad I found mine to be just as good, if not better, than a Tdi engined Disco. They are a lot lighter, and have a much more instant and controllable throttle response. The only real difference I found is that you had to use a lower gear than in the Tdi, as the power & torque are produced much higher in the rev range. To say that they are underpowered is not true. They have plenty of power & torque. It is just that most people are used to driving diesel engined Disco's and find it hard to adapt to driving a vehicle that makes most of it's power & torque at engine speeds above 5000 rpm. Drive it like a diesel, changing up a gear at 3500 rpm, and it will feel sluggish. Drive hard, and change up through the gears at 5500 rpm+, and it is surprisingly quick, and pulls really well. The Mpi engine also makes a good coversion in to a series vehicle. It has twice the power and much more torque than the the series engines, and the lower gearing of the series makes it easier to access the top end power of the engine.
