Well i'm not very happy to say the least!
I had a s3 gearbox in my 2a V8 for years without any probs,i've now got a 2a one in after fitting it only a few months ago when i rebuilt the landy but today it decided to destroy itself while pulling up a steep hill in 2nd gear
There was a huge bang and a clatter and it lost all drive,at first i thought i'd blown a diff(again) so popped it in 4wd but still the same sound of gears flying about where they shouldn't be,i managed to limp it home the 5 miles but only have 4th gear so had to use low box.
so ,i've now got no reverse and no 1st gear which when engaged don't make a sound,i've no 2nd and 3rd but when they're engaged grind like mad and 4th gear which works fine?

looks like the S3 one is going back in :mad::mad::mad::mad:

sounds like lay shaft series 2 and 2a have weaker layshafts than series 3 ,4th gear is straight through so no torque through l/s

I thought it might be the layshaft but its that long since i overhauled a gearbox (about 15 years) its hard the remember :scratching_chin:
can you fit the stronger s3 one to the s2 box?

I thought they were but obviously not. I've still got the s3 box I took out so I'm gonna put that back in but it needs looking at first as it crunches when going from 2nd to 3rd and jumps out of 1st,not major problems but might as well fix it whilst it's out.

Well it's totally shagged, the layshaft has sheared in two and its taken some teeth off the gears on the main shaft so I'm currently rebuilding the s3 box :D

or even the front spigot as bearing is smaller on early box,and as you can see from pictutre it has no grove but raised spline to locate second gear so is later one

Got the s3 box built back together after robbing some parts from the old 2a box
The s3 box that I took out was crunching in to 3rd gear and jumping out of 1st,so i used the 3rd gear synchro and selector fork from the 2a box as it was the same and in good condition and it had a broken detent spring on 1st gear selector shaft so that was replaced too plus the nut on the back of the main shaft was loose so fingers crossed it should be ok now :scratching_chin:

I fitted the 2a bell housing and spigot shaft because the other shaft was worn on the teeth at the back where it locates into the synchro and this also meant I could keep the 2a clutch hydraulics.
When I was cleaning the bell housing I found this

Do you think it's still under guarantee? :D

Cool plate.
Remember, where there's blame there's a claim. It was obviously a shoddy rebuild to break so soon.
