235 85 16 on a disco

right then- thinking of putting some 235 85 16s on a disco 300tdi. just looked at the tyre size thread and i know about the front bumper end caps, the steering stops arent a problem, but wot may i have to do to the bump stops(extend or shorten?) and i presume i'll need a camel cut on the rear arch?
can i run these without a lift and if not how much of a lift do i need.

If memory serves me correctly you will need a 2" lift and prob a camel cut as well. I think a few people have even had to cut out the arches and fit defender style flexi ones to get 85 under

I have 265/75/16 on mine and a 1" lift - i have extended bump stops fitted and a camel cut and I still manage to catch the rear wheel arches under articulation

my camel cut is actually more severe than the normal size ones that you see people recommend.

best thing to do is fit the tyres then get it up on a bank or slope or home made ramp and look where it catches

camel cut an 2" lift needed

You don't need to change the suspension. A bit of surgery to the rear arches and front bumper end caps will sort it. Depending on what wheels you use you may not have to mess with the steering stops either.

i fitted 235 85 16's on std disco steel wheel's an believe me it needs a lift coz they are about 4" bigger than stock 205 16s, an you will need to adjust the lock stops, unless it's already had 235 85's fitted before,
if you don't fit a lift it would foul the inside of the wheel arch under articulation an that would be bad news

done a search but was after more info. its a 5 door so cutting the arches is a bit too much for me. dont wanna lift it too much cos of the assosciated problems with that!
will ave a rethink on sizes

I've got 265/75's on mine and I haven't had a problem with the tyres hitting anything. Neither have I had to move the lock stops but that is probably due to the modular wheels having more offset than standard rims. Standard springs are fine which means that my road handling is not ****ed up. I still have ARB's fitted as I do a fair bit of heavy towing so suspension travel is a compromise. If you were going for extreme articulation you would hit something even with little standard sixed tyres on.

Put some brackets in place of the mud flaps bracket to push the rear arch out aprox 1 3/4 a side, and pull the wings out apox 3/4 at the top,

This is what i did on my disco when i fitted 235/ 85 r 16's had no problems of rubbing all the time they were fitted.

dont forget to adjust the steering stops as well

I'm thinking of fitting 235/85 or 265 tyres as well ,and would agree with the previous post that you dont need an expensive lift kit fitted. If your springs are in good condition there should be room enough,I'm fitting some cheap britpart heavy duty standard height springs ,as mine need replacing anyway,so this should raise it up a little. 235/85 tyres are only about 3 inches diameter bigger than 205s so thats about 1 1/2" nearer the arches.

with heavy duty blue springs and standard size uprated shocks and extended bump stops I still tore the back of my rear arches up

I did the standard camel cut and still caught the rear arches under articulation

So I did an even bigger camel cut and guess what occasionally I can still snag them.

If you got those tyres on and have not needed to cut the arches you need to find bigger holes

thanx for all the input chaps. gonna look into the heavy duty springs first and then see wot will fit without to much work

Remember the STIFFER the suspension the LESS articulation you will have

Just take your body off, and fit any bloody wheels you want!

now why didnt i fink of that

looking at now fitting new springs but not hd ones and some 245 75 16. theyll give me bout an 1.5" lift on the tyres an a bit more from avin new springs on

i have just put 235 85 16 on my disco and a 2 inch lift and it still hits arches when off road

we just put 235/85/16 insa turbo special tracks on me mates disco..no lift as yet but we have cut approxx 1.5" of the front and rear archs and it has a tubular front winch bumper not the standard plastic job

I got 235/85/16 on my 300, it had a camel cut and a 2" body lift to fit them without rubbing. Good tyres and cope well in 'Defender Cut' Ruts, but they f*** up your gear ratio and torque.

ave decided not to put 235 85's on. looks like too much work and dont wanna mess anyfin up cos its our only transport!!!!
gonna go with some new springs, either standard or ones with a 1" lift-seen em somewhere but fooked if i can remember where!
as for the tyres its lookin like either 245 75 16 or 235 70 mt-not sure which yet. may even look at 205 16 sahara's or special tracks but would rather go bit bigger.
