Hi wise forum folk,

Got an issue and wondering if anyone can help?

Arrived home 2 days ago, reversed onto drive and parked leaving nose overhanging the pavement so I could unload shopping as I have a short driveway. Car was turned off. Shopping unloaded and I jumped back in to reverse car the extra foot or so. Into reverse, touched the accelerator, think I needed to push a little harder than usual (maybe had the handbrake on?!) then a jolt backwards and I stamped on the brake so I didn’t crash into the house. Was sitting there with my foot on the brake still in reverse. When I went to turn the selector into park, it wouldn’t move. Sat there for a minute trying, then thought it might reset if I turned the engine off. Engine turned off ok and selector went down. Tried to restart engine, but would not and dash showed it was still stuck in reverse. Tried on/off a few times with no change. Went inside to investigate on forums/YouTube.

Thought I’d go check again after 10 mins. Started first time and showed was now in Park. Turned the knob with ease to all selections and thought that it must have been ok. I didn’t move the car an inch, but regret not trying that now.

Following morning woke up and turned car on, selector rises in Park and won’t shift. Tried a number of times, left for 10 mins, tried again. Tried hours later. No luck.

Seen some similar threads on here, but wonder if anyone has advice?

Some additional background info: Eco start/stop light has been on for 6 months - I don’t believe this is a problem or related, but you may tell me differently. Also, have the windscreen replaced the day before, so wonder if there might be anything knocked or damaged through that process - it looks like the battery cover was not put back properly and the grommets were twisted etc. - although I had driven the car later the same day, so I’d be surprised as any damage would have had a delayed effect.

Can’t get this booked in to a garage until 13th Jan, so anything that might help would be appreciated.

Over to you.

Kind regards, James

Hi I’ve the same problem. My mechanic is installing a new battery which he thinks will solve the problem. Try charging your battery or putting in a new one.

Google discovery 4 earth cable.
D3 and 4 eat batteries for fun, plus it is that time of year.

How old are the batteries? If more than 4 years, that's the place to start.
Hi Nodge68,

Actually, it did get sorted out. Bizarrely, it was the brakes that were stuck on. When the tow truck pulled it of the drive, there was a bit of a wrench and they had similar trouble getting it off the truck. When they did, the mechanic lifter the brake pedal with his foot and heard a click. The gearbox selector was then working perfectly again. For good measure he replaced the brake switch (but I’d already done that days before, so I know it wasn’t that). All back to normal.

All back to normal.

When were the parking brake shoes last serviced? They should be done every 12 months, but never are. Parking brake sticking is a sign of impending failure of the parking brake module, so the get them serviced correctly ASAP.

Thanks for the note. I don’t have the car any more, but hopefully your response will help someone else in the future.

Hi

Had similar problem with Discovery 4 (16my), Intermittent locking of the gear selector, this turns out to be the common interlock solenoid that occurs on all the rise and fall selectors at some point.

After a lot of web ferreting the fix is simple, it took 3 days and £250, a company called ECUtesting in Heanor UK will take, diagnose and fix all issues and provide a lifetime warranty.
