Hi all.

I am thinking of getting a genuine 200tdi RRC to use as my main daily. Other than the standard rangy rot is their anything I need to look for within the engine and transmission, I know it should be a LT77 bolted in to it but are there any signs of ware to listen out for or look out for?

Hopefully I'm going to see one next Saturday, old girl on 184000 miles

We have a 200Tdi powered Ninety, and it is so far proving to be a reliable and very robust engine....agricultural and a tad noisy, but dependable and strong....some say it is the best power unit fitted to a Land Rover product (robustness and reliability wise)

Just make sure the FIP is timed properly, the most common issue seems to be HGF from No4 cylinder to the back of the engine, can be heard chuffing or felt with a hand round the back of the block.

They should start on the button pretty much and reports are, they can even start without the need for glow plugs....supposedly!

The FIP is mechanical with an electric stop solenoid, it is driven via a rubber timing belt that also runs the cam.....as with all rubber timing belts, make sure it has been replaced on the schedule, and if no proof, prepare to change it for safety....a snapped belt will cause pistons and valves to meet in unpleasant ways! causing a bit of a rebuild to be necessary or even a scrap engine!

Bent push rods seem to be common for some reason that I haven't fully researched, but this could be down to poor cam timing on belt changes!!

It won't set the world on fire performance wise, but is plenty capable (atleast it is in the Ninety).

Check the turbo fo play as a knackered bearing that pours oil in to the intake will make the engine run away with its self causing massive damage!

Oil pump is sound as a pound apparently, but a failure of the HG between and oil way and a cylinder will again cause an engine runaway event....

All in all a very good unit, reportedly much better than the 300Tdi...albeit the 300 is quieter and smoother!

Driving around a RRC and having the noise of a 200TDi under the bonnet is a strange experience.

Agricultural is one way of putting it!!!

LT77, watch out for that 1st->2nd gear change, worn boxes will be clunky on this change IIRC.

Cheers for that. Sounds like sound advice to me. I would love a 300TDi soft dash but they are around a grand more. If I get board of the 200 noise I can, hopefully soon, take my V8 RRC out.

Saint.V8 I got most of what you said but can you confirm the HGF bit please.

Well I love the look of a hard dash RRC.. they seem to rot less than the 300 for some reason too.. the 200 is noisier than the VM and the 300 but no diesel will ever waft it about like a 3.5 would and they all sound like taxis so.. :)

Anyway I hope it works out for you.. ;)

Took the VM out my 89 classic and fitted 200 tdi and gearbox out a disco, have to chop mountings off and weld in new but it would do 28 mbg ish round town over 30 on a run and yes noisier and heater no where near as good after the VM engine use to run with bottom 3/4 of rad blocked off in winter.

I had the use of my friends 200tdi 90 for a bit for trialing. The heater never warmed up and it didn't have a fan to cool it but even green laning it would barley get past the cold mark

nought wrong with..apart from missing 4 cylinders..run open exhaust, you wont need any silencers as turbo kills the noise..
as said change belt.
if dont start instantly walk away...same with smoke..(black ok as just over fueling) but white/blue =££££
lt77 excellent box,(so under rated) check for clunk on pulling away, engaging reverse as could mean worn output splines..

can be tuned too, bigger intercooler, more boost and fuel etc....though VM engine better imho
