well they will bolt on but there are 2 types of swivel housing one with 2 x brg as fitted to all classic rr and disco non abs and defenders after 94 (300tdi) non abs and swivel fitted to defenders pre 94 with one brg and bush at top also fits all rr classic and disco with abs so wont fit if keeping abs

ok

i have removed the cvs and the date on them is 1990, so we're definitely looking at pre 94 non abs 10 spline. im pretty sure from a defender.

im just about to open up the swivel housing and inspect the ball

ive got a spare one here from my 92 disco 10 spline non abs which has got 2 bearings - we're hoping these new ones got the bush!

report back soon :)

does that sound promising? the dates and combinations are confusing me! lol

From what I can make out, pre-1994 defender is good, because it'll fit my 1997 Disco with ABS!!

well, im a bit confused

the swivel balls are two bearing type

exactly same ball as the spare one off my 92 3.5 disco

looking at land rover parts shop, there was a part change in 92, but mine is just before the change on chassis number

definitely defender fitment as both swivel hubs have two steering arms (disco only has one steering arm on driver's side hub)

sooo, can anyone explain?

i saw on land rover prts shop that a bush is specified for certain models, but only at the bottom- the load bearing top end has rthe bearing.

erm, wadaya reckon fish?

i thought i had already explained 2 x ball ,double steering arm doesnt denote def or disc or rr load bearing is brg at bottom ,pre 300 def had frc2644(ftc5105)and so do abs models disco and rr,frc7065 2 x brg fits all non abs disco and rr +300 def

sorry james yeah i got got confused, load bearing at bottom :)

and yes you had explained, it just struck me as odd that the front axle which had originally come from the defender was a twin bearing type.

anyway, cheers :)

i've read this entire thread a couple of times now, and I have to say, i'm so confused I can't offer anything whatsoever. I know nothing about these things, nor do I really understand what swivel comes from what vehicle or anything!

Bit clueless, to be honest...

As for buying it for £7 just in case, I can't work out from reading this thread whether it's a definite yes, a definite no, a complete unknown, or somewhere in between! lol

there you go then - thanks for answering that james.

IF the front axle i have is actually from a defender, then its odd that it has non abs style balls on - which are not what it is supposed to have apparently.

but who knows where the axle originates.

either way fish its a shame youve got an abs car otherwise id have ben able to help you!

yeah no probs mate

conversely it makes me happy cos it means i have spares to fit my car - all this talk of early defender was making me upset that id bought these axles and the swivels wouldbt fit

now it seems they are the same :D

300 tdi defender had 2 x brg ball lr rationalised prts so that all vehicles at that time shared a lot of components like the only difference between 300 tdi disco rr and defender axles was calipers

but 300tdi was 24 spline and these are 10 spline?

unless theyve had 10 spline diffs and shafts put in?

the hubs and bearing appear same as my 10 spline disco though.

are you sure its defender,as 10 spline is pre la and therefore bush and brg, axles werent built with double arms as standard ,we used to produce for lr new axles from there parts for replacement when axles where no longer current ,and we fitted double armed swivel housings so they fitted lhd and rhd with same axle obviously using lhd and rhd swivel housings,lr i dont think did with current builds till td5 do you have first 3 digits of axle ie 21l

hi james

tbh i have only inspected a td5 defender before and thats where i got the double steering arm idea from

im pretty sure its defender yeah cos the guy i bought them off was saying how it must be a disco rear axle cos if the disks

frankly im not sure exactly what the axle has come from, it sure is a bit of an anomaly!

im not sure where i would find the axle code either mate, i have just sold the diffs out of it so cant check there!

all i have noticed so far is that it has a green band around it whereas my disco 10 spline JA has a blue band

cheers :)

number is written on seem near top between diff and passenger side ,as a matter of interest maybe series lrs had drag link and track rod on front so someone thought it was good idea
