hiya guys, the garage as set upon putting a 200tdi into my 300tdi as i blew the 300..there struggling to find an adapter plate or something, other than that everthing is there for me to go right in,
does this sound familier ??

summat about the gearbox on the 300 having a longer input shaft and clutch housing?

someone will confirm, but I cant see how that would be the prob.

If the 200 is out of a Discovery then there should be no problem with regard to it mating to gearbox.

Exhaust will be different, because the turbo is mounted in a different place on a 200 from a Discovery. All 300s have the turbo in the same place.

Also IIRC there maybe an issue with engine mounts as well.

there still having problems trying to find some bleeding adapter plate or sumat, the engine took out was a 300tdi from a discover 1 ES model. there trying to fit a 200tdi into it, and saying there struggling to get hold of a part, it also is an auto gear box.
any ideas anyone ?

to fit a N/A, TD or 200TDi engine to a R380 gearbox int as simple as ya think. To do the job in reverse and fit a 300tdi to an lt77 gearbox needs a N/A or TD bell housing fitting. So I'm not sure what, yu'd need to do to get the R380 to connect to a 200tdi. I've never heard of anyone doing a retro fit of a 200tdi to a R380 box. I'm sure it can be done But why you'd put an older higher mileage unknown engine into a newer vehicle is beyond me.

Just realised this is going into an Autobox. you'd be better selling the 200tdi and buying a 300 engine. was the swap your idea or the garages? Because they've created a **** load of work for themselves. And their labour rates are going to be a fook of a lot more than the cost of buying a 300 engine.

its an old disco anyways, and the new engine has less than half the mileage as the old one, its winding me up cos the step dad is sorting it when i would have just wacked another 300tdi in, but i got the 200tdi engine for nothing, hence why trying to get it to fit so badly lol.

nice one mate thankyou for that! just needed a nice simple answer, and thats done it. its been at the garage for about 3weeks now with still nothing happening. ! suppose i cud just change the gearbox to a 200 manual...... would be cheeper i guess

If it was the R380box in the disco then it would need the R380 shortbell housing in order to get it to fit. As it's going on a ZF auto box I haven't got a clue what you would need to get em to mate up. If I was you I would phone turner engineering and ask them what's required if anyone will know they will and they'll probably be the only ones who'll have a backplate if that is what it needs.

This all sounds just crazy to me. You start off with an autobox TDi300 with, one assumes, a dead engine and try to fit a TDi 200 motor in, have difficulties with the auto gearbox so considor changing the gearbox as well !!!!!!!!

Just get yourself a TDi 300 engine, sell the TDi 200 one as there's loads of Defender & Series boys who are always after them.

Either find just a 300 engine, or buy a rotten non-mot'd Tdi 300 Disco and rob the engine, it will be simpler and end up a better overall solution.

It almost sounds like someone is trying to pull something here.....................:(

You need the 200 TDI to Auto box backplate - (Part number:- ERR4612). They are very hard to get hold of, And cost lots of £££ (Last year i paid £230 for one).

I know that early last year Landrover Classic (Part of the unipart group) parts had lots on the shelf, But were not allow to sell direct to the public. I had a contact at unipart that put me in contact with some some to get hold of this part from them. (I think since then all the parts have been binned, But you never know) If you PM me i can give you all the contact info i had from last year and just see if you can get hold of one.

But if i was you I would sell the 200 TDI engine and put the extra money towards a 300 TDI engine.

Let's just be clear about this. In a manual TDi Discovery the 200 and 300 engines will fit either box and visa versa. No messing with adaptor plates and bell housings.

If we were talking about Defender engines then yes you would need a TD bell housing. I've done this to put a 300Tdi onto an LT77 box in a 90.

But if i was you I would sell the 200 TDI engine and put the extra money towards a 300 TDI engine.

This is sound advice. You still have the blown auto 300 engine so can swap the bits needed onto the 'new' 300 engine even if the 'new' one is from a manual.

Yu is right, Pikey if fitting an R380 box into a vehicle originally designed for an LT77 box - but aint he just changing the injun - in which case it will line up - coz its the injun thats new, so no need for new bellhousing or diff length props - they will all be correct for the vehicle.

or am I making an arse of myself as usual?

I thought the R380 was longer than an LT77 and needs a short bell housing to be fitted before it will mate up to a 200tdi.

We are drifting off topic here somewhat, but in a manual TDi Discovery Mk1 (just to sure there is no confusion :) ) you can put an LT77 behind a 300Tdi and an R380 behind a 200Tdi.

I have done both. There is some swapping of handbrake mechanisms and speedo housing needed, but nothing else.

There are bell housing and input shaft length differences between V8 and Tdi gearboxes, prehaps this is what you are thinking about :)
