hi all
had my freelander td4 now for 5yrs and has been trouble free, that is until the last month.
i did a 10 min drive parked up an then it wouldnt restart? it was turning over but wouldnt fire up. so i towed it home. left it for 24 hrs had a look around tried it again nothing. i disconected the battery for a minute then reconnected an it started???
it then ran for another day starting and stopping about 10 times then nothing. it would still turn over but not fire up.
put it in 2 a local garage who cleaned out the fuel lines checked the pumps an all fuses and it started again and ran for 3 weeks an now the same problem has happened again turning over but not firing up?
any one with any ideas wot in could be cam sensor, crank sensor or injectors>?
all help greatly aappreciated

Cam shaft sensor is a good possibility.. The copper windings break up.. Try removing it next time it doesn't start and then give it a gentle tap and refit it... Sometimes works

the HP fuel pump might be the culprit too..it is in the rear offside wheel arch.
next time it doesn't start try tapping it (behind plastic liner of wheel arch)
same happened to mone, replaced pump and all is now well

LP, not HP...You should normally be able to hear it running when you turn the ignition on. If you can't hear it when the car wont start then that would be a good place to start looking

didn't facelifts only get one pump..If I'm not mistaken?
as codpiece has a 2005 model he won't have the intank/in engine pump combo, he'll just have the one pump/filter behind o/s wheel arch.

only way to be sure is to connect diagnostics, they'll throw up any low pressure warnings

you are..... in tank pump replaced by wheelarch pump/filter combo...hp pump still in engine....

sir I challenge you, when they did away with in tank pump (LP) they got rid of the engine pump (HP)(behind battery) which used to house the filter also.

Post 2003 models have one pump/filter only delivering 3bar to the engine.

Rear wheel arch pump is LP with filter, HP pump is mounted on drivers side of engine, at least that's the way my Facelift is. (it's also in the Haynes facelift manual listed as injection pump)
Bit more info from the Haynes manual. HP (injection) pump pressure 250 to 1350 bar. The older system had the in tank pump and pump/filter under the bonnet which was changed in the Facelift model. Think we have a misunderstanding of the term HP pump as most of us refer to the engine driven pump as HP and not injection pump.

If you can hear it priming it's probably OK, could be worth checking the HP pump.

Did you have hot start problems before it just stopped starting at all? Injectors have been known to prevent the diesel from starting, search 'leak back test' in this forum for a diagnostic method that's cheap and easy.

I'll ask the stupid question as well, are your fuel filters blocked? Do you definitely have fuel to the HP pump? I had starting problems with my M47 engined Rover 75 after filling up with contaminated fuel, the filters had become clogged and it only showed a tank or so later.

i had no hot start problems it just stopped working
should i b able 2 hear front pump?
r these pumps noisy or quiet?

Should just be a whine from the rear LP pump (only the cheapo auction site pumps are noisy, just before they fail. The HP (injection) pump is engine driven so any noise will be masked by engine noise.
If I needed a new LP pump i would only buy the genuine LR pump as the cheaper option has a very short lifespan.

so the symptoms iv described are definately the rear pump????

I've just read all the posts.

Your symptoms do not necessarily conclusively point to the rear low pressure pump failure if you can hear it running - if the pump runs and the filter is not clogged up then that is not the fault that is preventing the engine from starting.

My pump failed at 86K - apparently very few reach 100K.
The filter should be changed every 60K

I hope that the confusion about the number of pumps has now been cleared up.

Pre-facelift there were 2 LP pumps - one in the tank and one in the corner of the engine bay.

Facelift models have only one LP pump sadistically positioned in the rear wheel arch in the same mounting unit as the filter unit.

There is, and always has been, only the one HP injection pump, actually mounted on the engine itself.

Because it's a sod to get at many folks neglect to change the fuel filter.

Good luck,

Singvogel.

iv already changed the fuel filter 8 months ago an local garage confirmed all filters are clear?
come on sum 1 must had similar problems im getting desperate now lol
