Why is it ambiguous?

Scene 1 - You'll get a tube of RTV
Scene 2 - If you ask for a M62 VP gasket you'll get a tube of RTV.......if you ask for an M60 VP gasket, you'll get a gasket.

How many times do I have to explain it?

The M62 originally doesn't use a gasket - the pan comes with the bead already applied - but the M60 uses a gasket, this gasket ALSO fits the M62 and is well known to be a common solution to a leaking pan if the RTV isn't sealing correctly.....

SO - Land Rover/Jaguar don't list a Gasket as it was never fitted to the M62 powered Range Rovers, ever.....
Similarly - BMW don't list one for the M62 powered Bimmers either as it was never fitted to them also.....

But the M60 Gasket that IS available WILL fit the M62 valley pan and is well known in Bimmer circles to be the easiest solution if leaking keeps occuring on the M62.

That being said, correctly applied RTV and left to cure will do the job.

It's ambiguous for a couple of reasons Ant, your reply to OP and to me, you did a helluva job throwing microcat pics etc up but it falls back to what I thought I knew, and now I'm reassured I was right, RTV is all you will receive from LR.

If you expected the OP, or all others to have read your mind re. the M60 'real' gasket then I fear your nose is firmly in the Bimmer camp.

To conclude, It's absolutely wonderful to have a solution to the DIY RTV gasket problem, I just wish I didn't have to use my divining rods to get to the bottom of it.

all is good Ant, your the best.;)

.......it falls back to what I thought I knew, and now I'm reassured I was right, RTV is all you will receive from LR...........

............I think we both will have to settle on the fact a gasket does exist, it is mentioned in the manual, but it doesn't exist as a genuine part hence your knowledge of the RTV tube and mine of a gasket!!

I stand by my offer to settle as I posted above......a usable gasket does exist......not as a genuine M62 part........hence why you correctly posted about the RTV

There was no divining necessary, I gave examples of the gasket, part numbers and photos....there was no hidden message, ambiguity or confusion except from the part doesn't exist for the M62, but does for the M60 and will fit the M62....as I tried to explain!

Written communication is woefully inadequate at times, hence why as cave-people we developed the art of oral communication to better explain and convey meaning and message.

All is good Ant, I'd take oral any day of the week but your of the hook, I've taken a small course on hypnosis hence the wife now believes she's an ice lolly taster:p

Sooo, ask for an M60 gasket, I got you now!
