I took off my valley and and stripped and cleaned the surface on the pan and the engine block. I reused my old pan and used Pro Seal red hi-temp RTV silicone instant gasket and my pan is leaking. I've done this twice now and same problem. Is it the pan or something else? I'm I not torquing them down enough? Please help.

There is NO gasket for the M62 valley pan, Landrover will obligingly sell you a tube of Black RTV with a part number, lol.
You need to apply it to the block and let it almost cure before refitting pan.
Nice regular bead.

Saint, nuff respect, but......:D

A gasket can be fitted.

Damn you, thought I had you on the ropes:D
Interesting, in all the bars, in all the towns, in all the parts dept's it's been black goo, looks like they have had to bow to pressure to produce a proper part, probably because of OPs experience, do you perchance have the current PN saint?
Is that image LR or Bimmer? Looks suspiciously like a new pan with sealant robotically applied??

Er, ahem, no it isn't filled with coolant, it displaces and directs coolant.;)

The images are Bimmer admittedly, but considering the engine block is the same in both, it only varies lower down in the sump area as the RR front diff is in that area.....the BMW part number is 11 14 1 742

The pan leaking is a common problem on the M62 engine in both the Bimmers and the L322.....

Torque setting for the pan and cover bolts is:

Sorry to push this, but does the valley pan have the facility to accept a pre-formed gasket (which looks like machine applied RTV)?
It is available -

Part Number 11 14 1 742 as a Bimmer part - although I believe it is aftermarket only to solve the common leaking problem.

Not sure LR stock it either and is not showing on a parts list. Although RAVE does mention using a new gasket (excerpt in previous post above and underlined) but again, MicroCAT isn't showing a gasket as a separate part....

I think we both will have to settle on the fact a gasket does exist, it is mentioned in the manual, but it doesn't exist as a genuine part hence your knowledge of the RTV tube and mine of a gasket!!

No, with respect I won't settle on your version because I believe it doesn't exist, yes it exists if you purchase a new pan but an original pan has no facility to accept a 'dry gasket'.
Happy to be corrected, but not hypothethically.

If pre-formed gasket actually exists, do you just place tween' vee and slap cover on?
I very much doubt it.

2 of your supplied images show a new pan with RTV sealant factory applied, not applicable here.

Can you see the image above of the gasket with a bead???? I'll put it here again for your reference -

The pan is the same as the M60 version which uses a gasket 11 14 1 736 175, the M62 originally uses the pan with the RTV pre-applied......you can use the above gasket with the M62 engine....

The underside of the pan is flat and will accept a gasket....(this is a new pan in the photo - but remove the old RTV and use the M60 gasket and she'll fit!!)

Thank you for the clarification, things have evidently moved on since I had my M62 L322, all those 3 years ago when a tube of RTV was the only VP gasket available across LR parts desks.

If I were doing it I'd opt for a tube of RTV and do as vid, but hey, I'm a purist, lol.

Thanks Ant, hope you seen my angle.

No probs, All LR will sell you is the RTV thats for sure, but a gasket is available that will fit....

RTV applied correctly onto clean mating surfaces and allowed to cure will seal correctly as that is the way it was originally....but RAVE mentions fitting a new gasket, but MicroCAT doesn't list one - with a bit of research and nosing around, the above gasket is available and is a way to get the VP to seal if RTV is failing!

No offence was intended in pushing my point, I hope none was taken.

Read my reply more carefully -

The valley is the area inbetween the Vee of the engine.....on the M62 it is filled with coolant as part of the cooling system, there is a pan that sits in the valley and is sealed with a gasket, then a cover, and the intake manifold fits over the top of it all....

The valley is filled with coolant - the pan sits on top of this, then the cover.....

Absolutely none, but for clarification to the OP, an aftermarket gasket is available (news to me), but I fear the OP merely applied the RTV and prematurely squished the sealant by not allowing it to cure.

In my mind the virgin RTV is applied to block in a neat an even fashion....
Then, contrary to instinct walk away for 24 hours to allow it to cure, then the pan will compress down upon fitment onto to a cured but stiff RTV, achieving a seal hitherto impossible.

Yes, my bad re. valley role, I actually thought it was a 'diverter' as in a shape or lump designed to force coolant to the inner cast of the bores to aid cooling, which it does, by being filled with coolant, doh.

Have I understood you correctly,

1. BMW nor LR sell a 'real' gasket, but they both sell RTV?(disregarding buying a new pan with RTV factory applied)
2.An aftermarket formed gasket is available but is neither genuine BMW nor LR?

It is a genuine part for BMW M60 engines, that can be fitted to the M62.....hence if you walk into a BMW or LR parts department and ask for an M62 pan gasket - they sell you a tube of RTV....ask for an M60 Pan Gasket, they'll give you one!

The M60 gasket can also be had aftermarket too if BMW parts prices are too eye-watering!

Jeez, How do you spell ambiguous?

Scenario 1 ok... I saunters into LR and asks for VP gasket pn**********, wot does I get?
Scenario 2 ok....I walk prickishly into BMW and request VP gasket pn**, wot does I get?
