Morning all, in the past few days I have noticed my temp gauge needle randomly jumping around. Most of the time it is stable at the half way point but every now and then it will jump up for a second before returning to normal. Occasionally it jumps right to the top of the range and when this happens the landy becomes very hesitant, lacking power.
So is the thermostat knackered, sending spurious readings to the gauge and ECU?
If the ECU thinks the engine is overheating does it go into limp-mode or do I have something else going on here?
I regularly clean the oil from the injector loom with contact cleaner so hopefully not that!

sounds like the wire from temp sender is earthing, causing dial to fluctuate and like you said, ecu goes into limp mode

Mine is reading oppositely too and if you rev the engine, it fluctuates a little.

It's the ECU it seems however as it behaves fine with my other ECU plugged in.

A duff thermostat shouldn't make the needle jump, even if it was sticking the water temp cant really change that quickly enough. You probably have a chaffed sender wire, when it shorts the gauge will jump to high, the ECU will also detect this as a rise in temperature and may change the fuelling to try and compensate.
