2001 td5 pressurising cooling system

Hi, I have a slight problem with my td5, it pressurises it's cooling system to the point it blows a little out, it's blowing out approx 1l to every 150 miles doing short runs more like 1l every 5-600 miles on long runs, doesn't get hot even when towing 3500kgs temp doesn't move from halfway, changed pressure cap made t slightly better but still not right,
I have given it a sniff test at work And it came up totaly negative even the lower chamber stayed blue,

All the threads I have read seem to suggest head gasket but it's symptoms done seem to suggest it as it is running fine with no overheating probs etc

a slight head gasket leak can give you your symptoms , if it is it will get worse and prove the point,the system will still cool with some loss of coolant until loss reaches critical level,you can get pin holes in rad that only show when system is at max, hoses often leak , thermostats fail,rads stop cooling all over the entire surface , temp gauges arent accurate, id pressure check system

Dont trust temp gauge.check trmp with nanocom

Yes, I ran mine for months (see posts) in this condition. Even the garage men where loathe to take the head off before lots of other messing around. The 'wise men' of the forum had little doubt of the diagnosis and, eventually, I persuaded my local garage to 'do the head'. £800 pound later and all was well. I think the reluctance on the part of mechanics is that it can be a lot more expensive (eg cracked head) so a longish troublesome job on an old motor that they might not get paid for

According to rave 96.
recently i fitted an oversize sport radiator and i am overcooling.temp gauge sits bang in the middle as it used to with standard rad nano showing between 90 and 96.with the new rad gauge in the middle i get 68 on nanocom.towed my caravan 140+ miles and got readings of 78 to 86.

Sounds like I might have to take the head off after all then,
Would plastic dowels cause this? Do you think I should be replacing them at the same time for steel ones?

have you checked the rad and thermostat?

Mine did the same for months then it finally went taking what I think is a liner with it, I've still not taken the head off to inspect but am expecting serious expense.

I'd get it done sooner rather than later in hindsight.

Hi, I think I'm going to try a thermostat first as with snap on diagnostics it's showing 104 degrees C when fully upto temp, hoping it may just be a partially stuck stat, here's to hoping

Can't remember if you said, but in addition to the new 'stat I would also change the header tank cap for a genuine one.

If the current cap is not releasing pressure correctly you'll get a build-up then a blow.

Hi all, just to let everyone know the problem turned out to be the plastic dowels had disintegrated and the head had moved, so new head gasket with metal dowels etc and all running fine, if anything a bit more spritely than before, thank you for everyone's advice hop it helps someone else in the future
