Hi All,
New to the site and looking for abit of help, Im going to purchase a 2001 TD5 XS Auto tonight. Done as much research as a can on this, hes asking £6400 on 88000 Miles, Faultless conditon. Seem like a fair price firstly? Can anyone help me with what to look for mechanically, iv been told check gearbox oil to make sure its red and dosent smell of burning. Also to do a hill start to make sure theres no jerking of the gears and soforth.
All help much appreciated as i want to make sure its going to last me a good few years.

Dave.

The original asking price was £7000 now iv managed to get it at the above price. He sold the es model the one i wanted to buy originaly but he sold it on me. So now offering me this..

I guess there doesnt seem to be much pattern to d2 pricing but about 2 months ago I bought 2000 on a W with 130k on the clock and a full service history for just under 3k. its in pretty good nick body wise and I had to replace the front shocks but I thought it was a good buy

anyway good luck with your purchase and make sure you check as much as you can. check for oil in the red plug to the ECU, check for any fuel leaks around the back of the engine (drivers side) check the engine oil level if its overfull I would suspect leaking injector seals. Oh and check the rear half of the chassis for rust

best

I reckon it's £1500 minimum over the top in terms of value. Ultimately it's your decision but bear in mind that in terms of car ownership costs, depreciation is the biggest single cost so if you buy right you have some control over this.

Just because someone is asking a given price for a car does not mean it's worth that. Remember that the last long winter pushed 4x4 prices through the roof.

Good luck

Dave

Theres a BIIIIIG difference in the mileage tho between the 2 cars. Once any vehicle gets up to that sort of mileage, the price drops dramtically.

What more than 50%?

my philosophy and I must stress this is a personal opinion based on my experience buying a landrover with between 90 and 110 k on the clock will cost more money in the long run than buying one with say 130k on the clock. as long as its been properly looked after the performance and the condition will be the same but you miss that "bad spot" where lots of things need replacing.

I would rather buy a well looked after disco with 130k for £3000 than a 80k one for £6500. As long as I choose carefully the condition will be almost the same and I will have £3000 in the kitty to spend on it as I need, and then I KNOW its been done right

but its just my personal opinion

Completely agree with that line of thinking Dave.

IF something goes wrong you've got the money to deal with it and if nothing goes wrong you are £3500 up.

And who's to say that the £6500 version will be a paragon of virtue???? It's still the same age just lower mileage, so anything made of age related wear material such as rubber components will be just as needy.

Don't pay too much, Disco prices are coming down.

Just looking at the history of mine before I bought it, between 74k and 120k it had
new clutch and flywheel
new starter motor
new fuel pressure regulator
new alternator
new abs controller
new radiator
new intercooler!!!!
new injector loom (i also had to replace this when I got the car as it was full of oil again)
new antiroll bar bushes
new MAF (I had to replace this again when I got the car, replaced with genuine one)

I paid £2950 for it, gave it a full service just for peace of mind and got it chipped by dynaMike. put four gas shocks on it

it just sailed through the mot last week.

its smooth quiet loverley to drive and does about 32mpg and goes like stink! and so far (holding on to my big wooden table) completely reliable and faultless. Next week I am having it waxoiled.

In total I reckon I have spent about £800 including the waxoil and chipping and I intend to keep it for as long as it lasts

When i PX my Disco 2 ES in 1999 V, 120K on the clock i managed to get £4800 for it. Not bad i though as i only paid about £5200.

So in a 18 months it lost £400.

But they are expensive machines to maintain so make sure your not stretching yourself, as u will need to repair it!!

My 2000 TD5 cost £3950 two and a half years ago. It had 118k on it then and 136K now. At the time it was not much more than tdi money but no service history worth talking about. Since buying it I've fixed a heap of niggly faults and am proud of the fact that I have done all of them myself, except for the fuel pressure regulator which was faulty when I bought the car and I couldn't find on the engine LOL!.

If I had to leave it in somewhere for all these faults my heart and wallet would have been well and truly broke by now.

So agree with the above, If the mileage is getting on to 130K and the car has been well looked after, you might reasonably expect for a heap of the TD5 common issue to have been sorted out by now. Backed up by receipts of course! Apart from the head issues the TD5 engine is pretty robust. I saw one for sale on another forum with nearly 300k and it was still going strong.

Also, the oil pump bolt being checked and loctited is a good one to get out of the way. Not particularly dear to sort but catastrophic if it fails.

Edit: If air suspension fitted, the air bags are service items and will need replaced if the originals are still on. Great if previous owner has done this one too.

Cheers, Andy

Watch out for the ACE system if its fitted. About that age, it will probably be starting to rust(The pipes that run around the chassis). A bit of a bastid job for somone, can be up to £1000 to be replaced, or convert it, but will still cost around £400 (all garage prices) for the work to be done.

if you just take the actuators off of the ace system wont whats left just act like normal anti roll bars?

B.L.R.C in Saintfeild and a good job. It feels the same to me and at least I don't have to worry about leaking pipes anymore, which are more expensive to replace than getting the anti rollbars.

I am unable to see how the prices for td5 discos vary so much,a local dealer near here asking £8995 for 2002 model (preface lift) with 8800 on the clock although in good nick and was auto but no leather.
I bought my 2002 td5 in Nov 2008 with 5900 for £6695 although with a few small nics here and there.Bought from a dealer, did I get a bargain or what??
