Hi everyone..
wonder if anyone could explain this to me.... might sound silly and a really newbie question, but you only learn if you ask..

I did a few searches but couldn't find exactly the info I'm after...

so..
wading kits and wading plugs... what's that all about?

So far from what I've read, when you intend to go in water or mud you should fit the wading plug.

where do you fit them and what parts do you really need to plug?

the wading plugs should be fittend when goin in water or mud...can I just fit them on my drive, play all day and then take them out when i get back home? Or do people get muddy in the field going under their Landys to fit and take out the plugs?

if I fit a wading kit.. like this - LAND ROVER 90 110 RANGE DISCOVERY TDI full Wading kit on eBay, also, Land Rover, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 11-Apr-09 20:55:57 BST)

Do I still need to take the plugs out or can I leave them on all the time?

thanks for all advice.
JP

I fit the plugs on the day, then take 'em off when I remember, which can sometimes be a couple of weeks hence... All they're doing is blocking up drainage holes, so the sh1te that should drain from the gearbox bell-housing/clutch casing etc won't get out for a while.

However, they also stop watery, muddy, gloopy sh1te from outside getting in and fecking up the clutch/gears/engine/whatever it can get to .. ;)

The wading kits are to extend the breathers. If you don't have a snorkel, or to start with, you only really need a length of tubing to extend the rear axle breather from the A-Frame up into the engine bay. Mine go next to the window washer bottle, ready to be extended further up a snorkel when I get some round tuits .. ;)

I do have a snorkel and my intention is to get the breather kits and connect them to the snorkel..

but... (and this is probably a really dumb question) I want to make sure I'm putting the wading plugs in the right place, but can't find anywhere a pic of where they go, something showing the exact place where they are.. :(

Couldn't find one online, so here's one I took just now .. but bear in mind that mine's a 300 Tdi and I have little clue as to any differences in that area .. ;)

Scuse the ****e around the casings ... but note the BRAND NEW plug, I never skimp on stuff ... ;) Old one was getting fecked, been in and out like a sausage in a brothel !!

hahahaha!!

cool, thanks for that!!
So you don't use a plug to protect the timing belt? you just use that one?

cheers for the pic!

Dammit !!!!

I knew I'd forgot one ....

Yes, I do use one there .. too busy taking a pic of the clutch/bellhousing that I forgot! On mine (300 Tdi) the timing cover drain hole is right next to the crank pulley .. looks almost like a large sumpbolt hole .. ;)

No worries, mini thief ... ;)

Obviously if it's been wet and I'm off-roading I use them, if I know I'm going wading I do, but for most green-laning I don't want to be that deep anyway (At least not round here) or I know I might be in trouble .. most of 'our' green lanes are flat farm tracks to the South, or even flatter peat marshes and moors .. so if you sink there you don't stop sinking .. ;(

When I do put them in I almost always forget for a week or so, but I've never really had an issue, take them out after a week or so (or a few weeks) and the most drainage I've had build up was a little dribble .. ;)

Only issue I've had was leaving the bellhousing one (or losing it) out once .. and on the way back got a touch of clutch slip (There's a thread on here, 'Fried my clutch' or something like) which cured itself ... ;)

Good question JP. People keep asking me if i have them (Which i don't) and that i should get some.

Perhaps we'll get some and just put them in at the weekend when playing but take them out for normal weekdays.

Yeh, that's what I'm thinking, put them on before we go and take them back once we get home.. (its only like 30miles drive anyway..)

btw... Paul D, have I found the timing belt hole where to put the wading plug?
(I crawled underneath today after work, to have a look....)

I am gonna suggest summat really silly here - but has anyone tried using a drain valve?

it just seems silly to keep inserting and then removing wading plugs (and loosing them?) - so why not use summat with a tap on it to open normally and just close when going laning?

Havent found out yet - does someone know the thread sizes?
and wotcha think?

Yup, as Goonarmy says .. I just used silicone hose (for a fishtank) to extend the rear axle breather.

goonarmy... yeh, I know, I'm lazy as well..

Plus, I had a look earlier on some suggested websites from where to get the bits from, half of them didnt work, and then I wouldnt even know the sizes, type or how many I would need.. lol

did you buy this one I've put the link to?

nope but same stuff init, slightly cheaper than the one i got i think by 5 10 squid.A pic of wot yer getting would be nice
