I was gonna put the fan on the engine side of the rad like most prod cars, but the other side is cool.
The 300 is nothing like the 200, it has a serpentine belt, if you look at my tdi in a series thread you can see by the photo that the alty is close to the chassis rails, I'll look and see tonite if I can put the series alty where the steering pump is either way I'll need a shorter belt, unless I take out the steering pump vanes, fill the housing with oil and blank the ports, and use the pump as an idler wheel.
Gonna bodge an exhaust, I'm too tight to spend 300 quid on one.
 
Proper job, Fenby. You've got around to that a lot quicker than my 'long term' engine transplant ... I'm sure last time I saw that Landy it had a Ford engine in it!! That recess for the intercooler almost looks like it's been made for the job.

When I look at the 200 conversion it always amazes me how much space you chaps seem to have available. I guess you've still got to find room for your coolant expansion tank somewhere.

In direct contrast mine is crammed tight and I'm fast running out of space around the motor. And yes, all those coolers actually do something! Fenby you might recognise [the remains of] your old front panel.

Sorry to mither you fenners, but can I ask a couple of q's about your installation.
I'm at the point where I need to fit the rad/intercooler, did you mod the front panel between the wings, or is it standard just with the braeckets bolted on to fit the mounting pins for the rad and cooler.
I was wondering whether to grind off all the steel behind the panel and start again with new mounts/bonnet catch support.
And whats the air filter?, is it agricultural.
Finally the likkle pipe that goes to the top of the rad just above the upper oil cooler connection, where does this go?, I cant remember when we oiked it all out.
The smiths, that is a tight old job, thats either a great big bottle of nos on the right, or is it yer welding c02.

NOS - I wish! No, it's my contribution to global warming.

That ickle pipe probably goes to the rad expansion tank. There's 2 types, pressurised (that has a relief cap) and unpressurised (where the relief cap is on the radiator). Don't do what I did and fit the wrong type! You probably need a pressurised one if you're using a 300 rad as I think it's very similar to the 200 rad I've used. The Disco expansion tank is a bit cumbersome. I'm looking around for another one at the moment and the ones off Rover hatchbacks look quite promising.

the air filter is housing is a modified Discovery 200tdi type

The radiator mountings are all made from chopped up bits of 50 x 25 x 2.5 box section steel. The holes have been drilled to take the rubber grommets as used on the Discovery radiator support framework.

Just a bit trimmed off the front panel to give decent airflow to the intercooler. I've left the nearside wing virtually unmodified - Only a 70mm ish hole cut from the inner wing to clear the pipe coming off the outlet of the turbo.

It's a tidy looking job your doing with that Mitsubishi engine and autobox - my conversion is a minor mod compared to your project. I'm looking forward to seeing it when it's finished. Have you managed to squeeze a cooling fan in there?
 
Sandglow: Land-Rover paint code LRC361. It was used on Camel Trophy Land-Rovers and on BL cars in the 70s. I think it was an option on export series Land-Rovers too.


my series 2 is that colour now, its a faded shade of jcb / komatsu yellow, used to be realy bright yellow, now its the colour of yours , so i dunno weather to keep it the dull or respray bright again,

nice tidy job on the transplant , just how i like a job, done propper.

Cheers mate, it feels quick enough to go out of control even up hill! I've just done a few sums which help explain why it goes so well:
  • A new Defender 90 Hard top weighs 1750kg and has 122BHP, which gives a power to weight ratio of 70BHP/ton.
  • A SIII 88" Station wagon weighs about 1454kg and with a 111BHP engine has a power to weight ratio of 76BHP/ton.
 
i think its all down to power to weight ratio mate, like yer say, having had a v8 series compared to a v8 110 , the speed / controllability of a series is amazin , yer can spin all 4 wheels then tare off down the road with smokin tyres, compared to say a v8 110 where it handles quite normal, as its still heavier
the only prob with the series is stoppin them ! :D yer putting a servo on it ?

that doesnt look so hard, I dont have any 1 bi 2, but I've loads of flat bar, a chunk of 6mm bi 50 should take care of that.
I nearly bashed the crap out of mi front panel, but looking at yours its not necessary.
I did have to cut away a load more of the battery tray, as the oil cooler pipes would not go in, looks like you have too, did you have some more pipes made up or re they the originals, I think I might just be able to get them to reach original lengths.
I wanted a bit of reassurnace with all the work I've put in so I lashed mine up today and had her running, sounds cool, nearly as good as a common rail, cant wait to go for a razz, wont be doing any off roading straight away, theres no clearance under mi exhaust for now.

I'm not planning on that for the time being at least, mainly because it would interfere with my snorkle pipework. I might put some 11" twin leading shoe front brakes on it at some point though.
