hi guys
My bottom end has broken, i was wondering if you could tell me which other land rovers had the 200 tdi engine fitted as standard as im after one & may buy a whole vehicle
cheers for reading

They were fitted to 200tdi discoverys and 200tdi defenders and 200tdi classic range rovers.

And I'll give you £50 for yer yam so long as you deliver it to me.

lol
Well thats pretty obvious what i was more trying to find out was ...........
Do all rangie classic diesels have the 200 tdi ? would you know which years as they dont always state in the ads which derv engine they have ?
The chances of finding a defender cheap enough to pull the engine out of is pretty much impossible & recon engines are 900 quid, just trying to find the cheapest way of sorting my problem

I have a friendly mechanic who will change the engine for 120 quid ( with my help )
Just trying to source a half decent replacement

Most RRC had the VM diesel only the later K,L,M reg ones (I think) had the 200tdi (someone will correct me).
The defender 200tdi has different inlet and outlet manifolds and are worth a lot of money as retrofit to early 90/110/defenders.
Your best bet is to keep your eye out for a MOT fail disco, and sell the rest of the bits on internet auction sites.

So......when are you delivering the bike then?

Honestly Mr N if i took you for a drive im pretty sure you would say theres no point lol
but yeah im looking forward to some larger mantlepiece ornaments to go with the tiny 125 cc pistons previously wrecked - Just hope for nice weather tmoz & i may know more.

Fair play :)

I know it's easier to swap the engine than try to repair your old one, but it just seems sensible to get the definitive answer before you swap an engine for a Snickers :)

TBH ive never taken the sump off an engine before ( only ever done top end work ) let alone know what to look for when i get it off, im hoping the damage is gonna be obvious due to the noise the poor old gits making & i have a haynes manual so il give it a go.
may even take some pics for them pic lovers on here

hi there the crankshaft from a 19j thats the 2.5 diesel non turbo engine is the same as the 200 tdi and fits right in there, using new shells etc is adviseable ..

Update
Had a mechanic friend of mine over last night - hes had a listen and assured me its the big end shells, he has also informed me that he,s pretty sure i can replace the big end shells from below with the engine still in.
He has said that it will involve removing the sump & oil strainer - turning the engine till the big end you want to do is at its lowest point, removing the conrod end cap then turn the engine anti clockwise to allow the conrod to come free from the crank, remove the old shell put the new ones in - reposition the crank & refit end cap !
he also stated i need to measure the crank to check for regrinding with a micrometer to ensure i source the correct size shells.
The only worry he said with doing the shells that way is that you have to watch you dont hit the piston on to the valves !!
The bloke is an excellent mechanic - but just wanted to check with you chaps that this can be done - Not going to buy a new engine if i can fix mine !!
cheers for reading

It can be done, it's the old skool method.

Did my brothers puma like this a couple months back.

Normally bring crank journal to bottom, undo end cap noting orientation, tap con rod up a few mm, extract cap shell if not come out with cap, fit new rod shell to bottom half of journal and push round with screwdriver, then the old rod journal gets pushed to the bottom so you can remove it. Bring the rod back down to contact, check shell is square and centred. Fit shell to cap and fit cap, add oil and assemble.

If the crank ain't damaged this should fix it, at least for a little while!
