Hi Chaps,

Looking for some considered tdi wisdom.

Got some pics attached, but point is I have picked up an a proper 200 tdi motor as a spare.

I know nothing about it, but getting on with taking it apart. Why might the timing case be as contaminated as it is - worst I have seen?

Also, another nice feature is that the sump is very over-filled and it looks like water has been dumped in there and is very well mixed. Did it just blow the inner crank oil seal maybe?

And yet another tasty little find is the end of the crank has had a hard life - looks like the damper and pulleys have been spinning around at some point in its life.

Head gascket has no damage at all, head is in great shape. Even looks like a head gasket was changed before engine scrapped.

Pistons in great shape and all lining up so con rods probably OK.

Cracked engine block, dodgy oil cooler/radiator, someone gone wading. What do you reckon? Should I just change the block and put it back together?

Cheers,
David

Welcome to LZ

That's shagged and I will generously give you 20 quid for it!

Crank damper coming loose and the keyway wrecking the keyway slot was common back in the day, so long as you time it up correctly it will be just fine.
New gaskets and seals all around, corteco seals are good.

Timing case mess it just the cam/crank/inj pump nose seal/s leaking.

What makes you think the block needs to be replaced? From you pic I would just replace the rank/cam seals and that should make it oil tight again.

Second the above on the crank, I had that on mine, just needs a quick tidy up and put it all back together with some locking compound especially on the keyway/woodruff key.

Just wondering about the overfilled crankcase with oil turned grey by water. Oil level was about 2 cm above the sump ladder frame. It has had a recent head gasket - which is in as new condition, as is the head. Timing belt was quite new too. Might it have been a mis-diagnosed head gasket and when replaced problems still there and engine given up as toast? Bit of a puzzle really. But I have a spare block here; wondering if I should build that one up instead.

Could of been left outside at some point or steam cleaned?
